Our next song, Don’t Stop Believin’ is based on the original Glee Arrangement by Adam Anders and Tim Davis. It was written by the composers Steve Perry, Neal Schon, and Jonathan Cain. Don’t Stop Believin’ was originally released by Journey, an American rock band in their album Escape, which came out in 1981. Don’t Stop Believin’ is featured in the final performance of the first part of the series finale in Glee. It is sung by the New Directions with solos by Finn and…
When a song is as heavily covered as Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That A Shame” from his album Rock and Rollin with Fats Domino you know that there is something special about it. With recording artists such as Pat Boone, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and even the 1970s rock group, Cheap Trick recording the song many people know at least one version. However the original version has a special something about it that helps it stand out from the many covers. The song has an enticing hook, interesting historical context, and is an earworm that was with me for several days after I first heard the song.…
Nick Carraway is the primary voice in chapter 5 of Fitzgerald’s 20th century tragedy. This means that all opinions and points of view are portrayed through Carraway’s first person, retrospective and fallible narration. Carraway is presented as fallible in this chapter, as the gaps in the narrative reveals Nick as a fallible narrator. He states that ‘I don’t know whether or not Gatsby went to Coney island’ yet he speculates what Wilson is thinking at the end of Chapter 8 exposing his narration to be fallible as it shows that a lot of the narrative could be speculative and therefore unreliable. Nick also speculates at the end of the chapter, ‘there must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams’, however due to the sense desperation that starts to oose out of Gatsby as he states with ‘automatic quality’ that he and Daisy had been apart for ‘5 months next November’, we know this to be untrue proving Carraway’s speculation to be liable.…
The piece entitled “Critics of the Morning Song” was performed by Alex Karigan Farrior and Joshua L. Peugh. The song choice was “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” by Ray Conniff, Judy Garland, David Rose, and Perry Como. This piece was choreographed by the guest company, Dark Circles Contemporary Dance. This dance was included in this year’s Fall Collection which was performed in the University Theater at UTD.…
Senior year is like listening to a broken radio that repeats the same phrase over and over again. As an incoming freshman in college, we are still unable to throw this broken radio out. We've been forced to listen to the phrase "How are you going be successful in college?" I believe that everyone has a different definition of being successful in college. For me, being successful in college is keeping up with my grades and living my life to the fullest.…
Lauriaenne Lamb Sconce and her husband, Jerry, former operators of the Lamb Funeral Home in Pasadena, CA, were arrested in 1987 with their son, David, after investigators alleged that they had mishandled human remains. Sconce attorney told jurors that mass cremations, commingling of ashes, and dental gold and other body part extractions did take place at the third generation family business. But these acts were done by their son, David, without their permission or knowledge. The Deputy District Attorney alleges David did not engage in the illegal activity alone.…
The breakfast club has one of the most unique and memorable soundtracks of all time. Something that made the movie gave it such a memorable track and the movies “theme song”, "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by the band Simple minds. Something that the movie did that not none to many movies had done at that point. They used this song twice, once at the beginning at once at the end. The two times this song is played in this movie, each function is shown. It shows genre because the movie was release in 1985 and this is around the time new wave music (the song’s genre) became popular. It sets the mood both at the beginning and at the end of the movie. It sets mood at the beginning because of the tempo and rhythm makes…
My group for the music time capsule was Ashley Armitage, Dylan Bates, and Jordan Crutchfield. These 10 songs were chosen because we felt that they will be relevant in the near and distant future. Honestly, the way my group chose our songs was by each of us picking three songs from our individual lists and mutually discussing the tenth song. The first song is Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. Ashley Armitage chose this song, and with very good reason.…
Miguel Primentel, a R&B and soul artist, was a breath of fresh air to the R&B game in the 2010-2013 time frame. The Ballad “Candles in the Sun” was a simple, yet powerful song with a very nice message. This song was released on his second studio album Kaleidoscope Dream on September 25, 2012. Candles in the sun didn’t chart because wasn’t a single, but the album was number three on the Billboard 200 (Wikipedia 2016). “I wanted to create a song and visual that addressed my everyday concerns of life” (Miguel 2013) The song was very repetitive but had an amazing message. The song was to make you think and call to attention to the problems of the world. During 2011 and 2012 there were conflicts in the middle east, many countries had political…
The song “I am” by Jorja Smith was written for the film Black Panther in 2018 as a single release. Jorja’s song is about seeking change but is too afraid of societies opinion. The change that Jorja is seeking is most likely controversial and many people think she should do something else. Within the song, Jorja shows that she is scared of what people people think but she is going stand up to negative people by saying “Try and shoot me down for voicing my own opinion triggering a part of me that’s always been indifferent”. This song is about change and it reveals the uncertainty someone may have when it comes to the unknown.…
“Talking shit about a pretty sunset,” is a song that portrays an overall apathetic outlook on life. The listener can clearly hear the discontent expressed in the words sung and the execution in the music. Thoughts of suicide, phobia of commitment, lack and gain of motivation, fixation and illusions of a better life are all present. Through the complex breaks and climax of the song, tells an emotional story of revelation, realization and self-actualization.…
Just Like California is a song by the band, Old 97’s, a band created in the year, 1993. This song, on the album Too Far To Care, best represents me as a person because I don't like to do things half-hearted. To me, the lyrics, “halfway there just wouldn’t be fair, so I'm going all the way tonight,” mean that doing a half-hearted job of something wouldn't be the right way to do it, so I'm going to do it all the way. I do a lot of things that require commitment, such as homework and sports.…
The song that I chose to analyze is “Changes” by Tupac Shakur. The late Tupac Shakur was an African American rapper who was shot dead years ago. His powerful lyrics have impacted the rap industry to this day, because he spoke the truth. His lyrics directly related to his everyday struggles, and how being a successful African American is not an easy task to achieve. Rap usually talks about events of everyday life, and the song “Changes” talks about racial profiling, poverty, and how racism affects the everyday life of African American people. Note that this song came out in about 1996 where things were different, however the lyrics of this song still ring in the ears of people who are affected by the evil of racism.…
Lieder ohne Worte (Song without Words) is written by the Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It is a collection of forty-eight short lyrical piano pieces of markedly song-like character that he wrote at various periods of his life between 1809 and 1847. They are well suited to the study of musical form because of their artistic value. Op. 19b, No. 1 Andante con moto in E major was written in 1830 and is the first in the collection. The piece is in the key of E major and modulates from E to B to G major.…
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, accuracy is “freedom from mistake or error: the quality or state of being accurate: the ability to work or perform without making mistakes” ("accuracy," 2014). Precision, however, is “the quality of being precise” ("precision," 2014). That doesn’t really help with the definition much. After subsequently checking the definition for precise it means to be “very careful and exact about the details of something” ("precise," 2014). The most notable difference in the definitions of these two words, according to the dictionary, is that to be accurate it is not necessary to be careful about the details of something as it is to be precise. This seemed to be a bit confusing until it is realized that it is possible to perform without making mistakes while estimating measurements accurately. However, to be precise takes a bit more discipline and a desire to perfect what is being measured with exactness.…
