Air and Angels Poem Analysis
John Donne 's poetry is a product of the Shakespearean times the English were under. Both born with a taste of wealth then having it deplete with age seems to be a common trend within the times. 1589 is the presumed year Shakespeare began to write and publish his works. Four years later in 1593, Donne 's younger brother died in prison due to a fever after being arrested for providing sanctuary for a Catholic priest. This caused Donne to not only analyze but question his faith. This turn of events caused Donne to begin writing poetry expressing his doubt and shame of being a Catholic as well as his other feelings of love lust and emotions. Coming from a long line of exiled writers John Donne 's expressionism and second nature literary technique seems almost genetic. Being Sir Thomas More 's fourth generation great nephew, Donne 's ideas weren 't too far from a Utopia. Unlike Utopia, which caused Sir Thomas More to be executed, Pseudo Martyr , Donne 's renunciation of the Catholic Faith gave him quite the platter of brownie points. Stating that the people could still follow the king and obey the pope the king pressured reluctant Donne to become a part of ministry by denying him any post other than inside the church.
Air and Angels the poem is a double entendre with a separate meaning each time the poem is read. Having multiple meanings and ideas within his poems, John Donne 's words journeys through several minds all at once arriving at confusion and admiration. Reading Donne 's works once or twice will not provide understanding because each time a new idea and a greater depth of understanding will dance into the imagination. Donne 's Air and Angels poem is no exception to his twisted thoughts and knotted words. The difficulty level within this piece is revolutionary, yet cautious.
