The World Wars are inarguably some of the greatest conflicts in human history. With roots going back to the earliest years of the twentieth century, what is now known as the Army Air Defense Artillery branch played an integral role in the Second World War. Initially called the Coast Artillery Corps, rebranded as the Anti-Aircraft Artillery, and finally becoming the Air Defense Artillery, the branch maintains a storied history of action through several key battles of World War II. The basis for modern Air Defense Artillery technology and operations, and for strategies to overcome current challenges, can be found by examining how the Coast Artillery Corps and Anti-Aircraft Artillery shaped these key battles.…

During the duration of WWII, air defense played a key role in border security along with overseas operations. At the start of the war in 1940, the Costal Artillery Corp was mostly comprised of gun battalions, automatic battalions and searchlight battalions. (Anderson, 2000) One major area of defense was along the coast of San Francisco, California. During 1940’s the Coastal Artillery Corps participated in many Army-Navy joint maneuvers. In November of 1940 1200 guardsman from the regiments left the port of Los Angeles for their new assignment in Oahu, Hawaii. Since the foundation stages of American history, the American spirit has always waved its valiant attempts to not only remain free, but to the best. From the Civil War all the way to current operations in the Middle East, the Field Artillery has been a major component to the success of all and any major conflicts. Modern day Army calls artillery, “King of the Battle”. This has earned its dynamic name from the many conflicts in which Field Artillery lived to tell the tale. Many components to a war change from; tactics, logistics, concepts of operations, and even geographical considerations. Much like the change of modern war, the Field Artillery continues to adapt and overcome to its growing demand for change and development. One topic of discussion that will be discussed is the use of Field Artillery in World War 1. Other topics to be discussed are the facts of the War “as it pertains to Artillery”; the effects of the technological advances of the Artillery during the war, and lastly not just the aftermath of the war, but lessons learned moving forward from World War 1.
