Short Paper - Air Pollution
The U.S news reveals the fatal air pollution measurements and effects China is encountering, but the news in China news themselves never shown the numbers beyond index 500. As the industry rapidly grows in North China, the most polluted region is often the target of the discussion about air pollution issues. However, China’s state based news sources constantly reported on the positive side, especially on how they fight over the improvement of their air quality, while the U.S news tends to report the negative side providing examples of health issues caused by the bad air condition and the extreme danger behind. The differencing perspectives of China and U.S reporting on air pollution arise from their distinct origins, which shape the way they portray the issue and resulting in contradictions on their coverage of the news.
China is reporting the air pollution in their own nation, which is often biased due to their subjective attitude toward the favor of themselves, while U.S as an outsider looking into China, is writing upon a more objective point of view, targeting viewers internationally. The China Daily announces the “central government is offering 5 billion yuan in finance rewards to Beijing and its neighboring provinces to fuel their fight against air pollution” (Zheng, 10/14). This news generally targets on the regions that could be benefited, and most importantly shows the government putting in great efforts and attentions on fixing air pollutions. On the other hand, the U.S news focuses more on the side of examining the data regarding the consequence of the pollution. For instance, the topic that interest them the most was health, which they address that “ Southern Chinese on average have lived at least five years longer than their northern counterparts in recent decades because of the destructive health effects of pollution” (Wong, 7/9) which was a study from an American science journal.
