Air pollution is very bad. We should regulate the excretion of air pollution from combustion engines and factories. Air pollution is contaminated air. It is both a health hazard and an environmental hazard. There are several ways how air pollution is bad, but there are also ways to help decontaminate or at least lower some of the pollution. Many people know about air pollution, but not everyone knows how hazardous it really is. According to the Environmental Protection Agency the six most abundant pollutants in the air are ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxides, sulfur dioxides, and lead. Ozone is the main component of smog (What). Smog is “a thick haze caused by the action of sunlight on air polluted especially by smoke and automobile exhaust fumes” (Smog). Particulate matter is made up of a mixture of different things including acids, organic chemicals, metals, and dust particles. Carbon monoxide is a gas chemical that is emitted from combustion engines. The air pollution from factories and combustion engines causes many problems. The pollution has been known to cause breathing troubles for people with asthma and other respiratory problems. It has also been known to cause acid rain. The ozone in smog makes it hard to breathe, especially for those with asthma. According to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection when we inhale ozone compounds they “damage the cells in our airways; this can lead to respiratory tract inflammation, causing irritation and burning, and can reduce lung function” (Air). Air pollution is also what causes acid rain. Acid rain is “rain that contains a high concentration of pollutants, chiefly sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, released into the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal or oil” (Acid).
