In October 1978, President Carter signed the Airline Deregulation Act. Prior to the signing of that act, the Civil Aeronautics Board had regulated airline route entry and exit, passenger fares, mergers and acquisitions, and airline rates of return. The deregulation gave all airlines more power to affect their financial future by allowing them to set their own fares, choose their service areas and acquire other airlines for expansion. After the economic fallout of September 11, eight out of the ten major airlines that controlled the industry in 1978 ended up filing bankruptcy. The three major airlines that survived – Delta, United, and American – controlled over two thirds of the domestic and trans-Atlantic air travel. The terrorists attacks of September 11, 2011brought to light the need to focus on better airline security, and new security measures were implemented to meet this…

Southwest Airlines employed many strategies over the years with their fist strategy being ads run in the media. Southwest airlines utilized a number of campaigns including skimpily clad flight hostesses, free in-flight alcoholic beverages and a “Love” campaign using the tag line “Now There’s Somebody Else Up There Who Loves You” in an effort to attract passengers. (Leavenworth) Southwest Airlines developed a ground crew turnaround plan that allowed them to add additional flights without the high expense of new plane purchases, even today their turnaround time is nearly half that of other commercial airlines. The idea of CEO Lamar Muse for system wide on-peak/off-peak pricing increased their passenger count and eventually became a standard across the airline industry. The company moved flights from an intercontinental airport where they were losing money to an abandoned airport with a closer vicinity to downtown destinations which doubled passenger traffic. In an attempt to fill empty seats, Southwest slashed its regularly priced fare in half, ran an ad against a competitor implying they were trying to run them out of business, and then offered complementary alcohol or ice buckets for those flying under the original fare price.…

In this assignment I was assigned the task of comparing 2 different airlines, one being a full service carrier and the other being a lost cost carrier, from United States of America, namely the Delta Airlines and South West Airlines. The points of comparison were market strategies, financial benefits, load factors, contrasting yield, revenues and passenger/cargo loads. The analysis was done on the business model and a long term strategy. Through this it would be known that which airline is performing better than the other. The disruption of air travel through various incidents like the terrorist attacks and global downturn, which can be considered as economic, political and social conditions, effect airlines adversely. References like books and online resources were used in finding the information required in how the airlines would perform in the future and how the business model has worked for them over the last few years.…

    Kite Runner Guilt

In The Kite Runner, I noticed that one of the most major themes is living with shame and guilt. Throughout the novel, Amir constantly finds ways to believe that people are ashamed of him, and he always finds reasons to feel ashamed. My first example of this is the relationship between Baba, Amir’s father, and Amir. Baba has very different expectations for Amir compared to Amir’s interests, and what Amir really wants out of life. Amir is not friends with the people that Baba wants him to be friends with, such as Assef, who is nearly the ideal son to Baba. Assef plays sports, and, when need be, can summon incredible manners and be polite, such as when he had spoken to Baba at Amir’s birthday party. Amir, on the other hand, doesn’t like Assef,…

The Giver placed his hands on Jonas’s bare back, and suddenly Jonas was on a hard ground. He was laying down with a bunch of small, tiny rocks digging into his skin. Jonas stood up and wiped the rocks from his skin. From the distance he can see these boats. They are not like the boat he was on when The Giver gave him the memory of the sea.…

United Technologies Corporation (UTX) has 5 different major segments. These five segments can be broken down into three major industries. Pratt & Whitney, Hamilton Sundstrand, and Sikorsky Helicopters can be classified as Aerospace/Defense (AEROD). Carrier can be grouped in the Heating & Air Conditioning Equipment Manufacturing Industry (HVAC). The Otis segment belongs to the Elevator, Millwright & Machine Rigging Contractors Industry. The company as a whole can be classified as a conglomerate; however, analyzing the Conglomerate Industry as a whole would not be beneficial for valuation.
