    Patrick Chura

In Patrick Chura’s “Historical Conditions of the Novel,” Chura discusses how the events occurring when Lee wrote “To Kill a Mockingbird” influenced the events in the text, creating a sort of distorted history. As Chura wrote for his thesis, “The mid 1950s/early civil rights era is therefore the context from which the novel is best understood as the intersection of cultural and literary ideology,” (Chura 48-49). Chura brings to attention some minor discrepancies between the text and actual history; for instance, the WPA is mentioned in the text two years before it was actually founded. As Chura wrote, “The WPA, for example, did not exist until 1935, but it is mentioned in the novel’s…

In the American society there are plenty of friends, but there is also the fair share of rivalries. There are also times where friendships turn into rivalry due to sequence of events. This is a common feat especially if two friends are competing for the same goal and one achieves it and the other does not. The higher the completion the worse the ending of the friendship can be. Even in America’s highest office this can happen. The most famous friendship between competing Presidents is the John Kennedy and Richard Nixon. This is especially unlikely seeing how they have completely opposite lives and lifestyles. These two human-beings had a similar goal, however everything else in their lives are completely opposite.…

In the play on page 22 when Mr. Hector says “Dakin’s a good-looking boy, though somehow sad”Mrs. Lintott replies“You always think they’re sad, Hector, every time. Actually I wouldn’t have said he was sad…”I think the fact that Mrs Lintott says “you always think they’re sad” represents Mr. Hector’s character in someway, from the play we can extract the fact that Mr. Hector is ‘sad’ in general. He doesn’t seem to realise that there is another side to life, and that is it possible for people to be happier.…
