Alan Shepard Research Paper
“I must admit, maybe I am a piece of history after all” -Alan Shepard. Alan Shepard, whether he knew it or not, really was a piece of history. Alan Shepard was born on November 18th, 1923 in New Hampshire. Alan was a good student through school, and after that he joined the US Naval Academy. He served in World War II. Then, exactly 23 days after Russia went to space, Alan Shepard got into space and back. Alan Shepard was the first American astronaut who used persistence to innovate ways to pave the path to space exploration and illuminated the world by becoming the first American to get to space. Alan Shepard used many habits of mind to achieve his goals, such as persistence. First of all, preparing to go to space is a very long process. It takes up to two years, not including education that is required. Some of the things that they need to do include rooms where they experience zero-gravity, and life sized objects to help them understand what they will experience. Alan was also the only one in his ship, so he had to be prepared for any situation. Another time when he was going to go on a mission, Alan was “grounded” because of an ear …show more content…
Even though his flight was 15.5 minutes, it was one of the most revolutionary moments in America. His ship, Freedom 7, was only fit for one person. Yet after the ship was successful, they were able to make modifications so that it could last in space longer, and so that it would hold more people. With Alan being qualified to be in space, he was able to teach others how to survive and help with training. In 1961, the year of Alan’s first mission, the ships and technology was not as advanced as it is now. So after his mission, Alan helped NASA better their technology for later missions. Even though Alan Shepard was not the first person in space, he innovated space exploration and without him, we wouldn’t be where we are

By the end of the murders, the suspect pool had been narrowed to Robert D’Onston, and later, Joseph Barnett, who was considered a credible suspect. Joseph Barnett had lived and worked less than a mile from the heart of Whitechapel, the site of most of the murders. Barnett was not a suspect at the time of the murders, but he was later declared a suspect in the 1970’s (Barbee). They suspected him due to the fact that he was married to Mary Kelly, who late became a victim. Barnett was a fisher and Kelly did not work, but once Barnett lost his job Kelly was forced to become a prostitute to support the both of them. They moved to 13 Millers Court, which is where, after a fight she and Barnett had, Kelly turned up dead and mutilated. Robert D’Onston,…

The Soviet Union was much more advanced in terms of space technology. Kennedy was eager to compete against the Soviet Union’s space victories. Scrambling to catch up, the United States launched its own satellite, Explorer 1.This was the start of the “Space Race.” On May 25, 1961, Kennedy made his bold goal public "landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth by the end of the decade.” He asked Congress for $7- $9 billion to fund the space program. This led to the improvement of American space technology. In February 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth. As space exploration continued through the 1960s, the United States was on its way to the moon. Although Kennedy didn’t live to see the day, his goal of landing a man on the moon was reached. On July 20, 1969 American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr. set off on the Apollo 11 for the moon. This was the memorable moment that Neil Armstrong stepped on to the lunar surface, and said the unforgettable words: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." This was a turning point in human history; it was the greatest technological achievement of the century and possibly in all history. The true significance was that this gave people at…

The Space Race was huge to society during his youth, and I thought it was awesome to hear about. It was really interesting to me that with little technology, countries were able to send men into space successfully. My grandpa was a teenager at this time so he couldn’t remember everything that happened, but he told me the important parts. When it came to the space race he told me, “when the Russians were first into space, it was a pretty big deal. Nobody in America liked them, so we had to do better. So we decided to go send our own guys into space to see if we could be better than the Russians.” He also told me that the Space Race was a massive rivalry that stood between the United States and the then- Soviet Union which lasted for many years. During recent times, NASA sent a space shuttle, Atlantis, containing people in 2010. The Atlantis space shuttle is the last shuttle that NASA’s program is going to send into space. Over the years, space travel has become more and more advanced. But NASA has went to more of a satellite-base program, which shows why they are going to stop sending humans into…

Guion Bluford Jr. was born in 1942 in West Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Bluford’s father was a mechanical engineer and his mother was a special education teacher. His parents always taught him and his two brothers to work hard and to reach their goals. Even as a young child Bluford liked to build model airplanes and put things together. His family and friends call him Guy because his first name is pronounced Guy-on. In his early years he participated in Boy Scouts and ended up becoming an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Overbrook Senior High School in 1960. Bluford went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1964. He married his wife Linda Tull during his senior year at Penn State. His wife became an accountant and later on they had two sons Guion III and James. Bluford was also an Air Force ROTC graduate from Penn State. After Bluford graduated he went off to pilot training and he received his pilot’s wings in 1966. In 1974 Bluford received a master’s degree with a distinction in aerospace engineering from the AFIT. In 1978, he also received a doctor of philosophy in aerospace engineering degree with a minor in laser physics from the AFIT. After Bluford logged more than 5,200 hours of jet flight time, it was time for him to reach even higher. Bluford’s astronaut career began when he was picked to be one of the 35 individuals to become space shuttle astronauts. This is significant because 10,000 other people applied to the program, but only 35 people were accepted. On August 30, 1983, Bluford became the first African American to go into space. At the moment the countdown reached zero and the shuttle lifted off the ground, Bluford was on his way to live out his dream. During Bluford’s career with NASA, he went to space four times. He was aboard the space shuttle Challenger for his…
