Alberto Houssay
Bernardo Alberto Houssay was the son of a French couple who had immigrated to Argentina. Though he sounds like an ordinary person, he is important. Why? He was one of eight children, but he was also the smartest. At the age of 14, he was admitted to the University of Buenos Aires. Three years later, at age 17, he went on to study medicine. He eventually became a doctor and, as a doctor, studied metabolism, the chemical process that helps keep us alive. During his research, he worked with diabetic dogs, dogs who had too much sugar in their blood. As a result of his studies, he discovered that pituitary gland plays a key role in diabetes. His discovery showed that the pituitary gland is responsible for the regulation of how much sugar the body

In auteur theory, a term originated by film critic Andrew Sarris in his essay, "Notes on the Auteur Theory"16, there is a desire to outline the personal vision of the director. This is said to be the key instrument to understanding filmmaking. In addition, he writes the question is how does a director express personal vision? The concern is how this theory is used to examine the initial “obsessions” and “thematic preoccupations” of the director versus the original creator or author. This essentially becomes a study or attempt to outline the director's desire and/or personal statement.…

However, Sunset National Bank, a place where he applied, is offering him a job over 15 other candidates, “Sunset National Bank has chosen him over 15 other candidates for the trainee position because of his excellent academic background, fine references from his previous jobs, and outstanding interview” (144) . This opportunity would give him a slighter better paying salary, starting at $41,000 for the first year. In addition to his pay at the bank, where he will be promoted to loan officer, he will be receiving an additional $3,000 raise. Luis is now stuck in a position where teaching is the dream job he has wanted since High School, but he has also been given the opportunity of becoming a highly recommended banker, two choices that can be a very stressful decision to make. Even though there were many important discoveries relating to insulin and diabetes, there still was no cure or treatment for it. Individuals diagnosed with this disease died shortly after diagnosis. In the early 1900’s, Frederick Allen – a leading diet therapist – invented a diet specifically for diabetic patients. He called it ‘the undernutrition approach’ where as his patients called it ‘the starvation diet.’ This diet allowed the diabetic patients an intake of 800-1000 calories per day for six days and fewer calories on the seventh day. It wasn’t ideal but the goal of this diet was to prolong the life of diabetic patients until hopefully a cure was discovered. (Turner, Novo Story of Insulin - Part 1, n.d.)…

Cesare Lombroso was the founder of the Italian School of Positivist Criminology. He rejected the established Classical School, which held that crime was a characteristic trait of human nature and that rational choices were the foundation of behavior. Lombroso, using a scientific approach and concepts drawn from physiognomy, early eugenics, psychiatry, and Social Darwinism, argued that criminality was inherited, and that the "born criminal" could be identified by physical defects, which confirmed a criminal as "savage," or "atavistic." While his particular identifying characteristics are no longer considered valid, the idea of factors that predispose certain individuals to commit crime continues to be foundational to work in criminology. Together with his emphasis on the scientific method, this revolutionary approach has earned Lombroso the title "father" of scientific criminology He was later forced to considerably alter his views after extensive study of the phenomenon of Eusapia Palladino, a famous spiritualist. He later wrote, "I am ashamed and grieved at having opposed with so much tenacity the possibility of the so-called spiritistic facts.…
