The school board is no longer certain fiction books and novels have a place in today’s curriculum. I disagree with this argument due to the following reasons. Oscar wilde once said ‘’ Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” This quote meaning when life imitates art, reality reflects what had previously been expressed in art (or literature, drama, etc). In many cases that is not always a good thing. For example, in the book “Crank” written by Ellen Hopkins; the innocent, adolescent main character Kristina Gorge struggles of drug abuse.…
Drinking alcohol for adolescents creates a vicious circle: first there is momentary denial of problems, then worries seem to disappear, and finally more alcohol is needed.…
Drug addiction is on the rise and never stopping, with new drugs being discovered, the addictions will keep climbing. The amount of drug addicts there are in america is rising everyday, now it is about 23.4 million people across the our country alone. That is approximately one in ten Americans. In the novel The Other Wes Moore not only drug addiction is a problem but even becoming a drug dealer isn’t a far stretch. The novel follows two men with the same name not far apart, but two different fates. One Wes becomes a respectable Sargent after cleaning up his act while the other ends up in prison for life after a rough life with bad involvements through it all.…
In 1975, Davis was once again drawn into drug abuse, becoming addicted to alcohol and cocaine, and subsequently taking a five-year hiatus from his career. In 1979, he met Cicely Tyson, an American actress, who helped him overcome his cocaine addiction. He and Tyson married in 1981.…
By the end of Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues”, the narrator has finally come to understand his brother’s music and drug addiction both individually and as intertwined entities. The reason why Sonny turned to music was as a form of escape, as seen when he confesses to his brother, “I don’t want to stay in Harlem no more, I really don’t” (Baldwin 136), which shows that Sonny believed that music was his exit ticket from the neighborhood. This is later reiterated when Sonny again tells his brother, “the reason I wanted to get away from Harlem so bad was to get away from drugs” (Baldwin 144). Unfortunately, Sonny remained trapped in Harlem even after his time in the army, eventually leading to his drug addiction and heroin use. It is confessed that that…
2. Drinking and emotions. Alcohol makes you less inhibited, and could make you play with poor judgment. Emotions play a big part in whether you win or not. If you’ve had a bad day, or you’re depressed, or in a bad mood can impact your ability to win. The other players are watching your every move, and they will know if you’ve had too much to drink or if your emotions are involved. This could cost you…
Based on a student athlete’s perspective, a member of a fraternity or sorority would drink much more heavily than someone competing in NCAA competitions every weekend. Their belief is such because there is much more opportunity to partake in drinking activities. Many studies have been done, such as one by Yusko and his colleagues that was published in the Journal of College American Health, to show that “during the week consumption is typically similar to that of a non-athlete non-Greek student.” However on a typical weekend a student athlete may binge drink the entire weeks’ worth of alcohol in one night, and then some. This can even out frequency of drinking of one group with a lower quantity with quantity of beverages consumed by another group less frequently. Due to this a Greek life member would be inclined to argue that athletes drink just as much as sorority and fraternity members. Yusko’s study contributed the unique factors of their environment such as “heightened stress, time constraints, social environments, and an increased physical demand” playing a role in how alcohol…
Substance use continues to be a major public health concern, not only for communities across the nation, but also for higher education institutions and administrators. The harmful consequences associated with alcohol and other drug (AOD) use and the negative effects on students, families, campuses, and surrounding communities have been well documented in the substance use field.…
Alcohol, more specifically ethyl alcohol or ethanol, is a depressant that provides 7 kCal of energy per gram, and is the most abused drug for athletes and non-athletes in the United States. Prior to my research on alcohol, I assumed that alcohol abuse was not prevalent among college athletes, outside of the occasional partying that normal college students partake in as well. But according to Lifestyles and Health Risks of Collegiate Athletes, college athletes generally drink more heavily and are more likely to engage in binge drinking than non-athletes1, and contrary to my belief, in the psychologic realm, some have argued that alcohol before competition reduces tension and anxiety, enhances self-confidence, and promotes aggressiveness. Alcohol use exaggerates the dehydrating effect of exercise and places an athlete at greater risk for heat injury during exercise. Many athletes consume alcohol-containing beverages after exercising or sports competition and the bottom line is that alcohol-containing beverages impede rehydration. 2…
Alcohol and athletes is a match made in heaven. This is what the myth would have you think but according to Miss Dunayer the myth is wrong. She says that alcohol slows people down and it may…
Some of you here may or may not drink, I dunno, but when it comes down to it, when that bottle if forced in your face, and you have to make the decision to take it or leave it, it’s on you. People can say or do what they will, but only when you listen to yourself and the advice you’re given, only when you learn from other peoples mistakes, only when you come to realise the real cost of alcohol will you make the right decision. And lead the way for those who wish to be like you. Football legend Kevin Sheedy who played or coached in over 1500 games when asked what the biggest barrier in a young footballer’s career was, said without hesitation, Alcohol. Sheedy also said that his football days were the best of his life, the fans the money, the team mates and the feeling of waking up each day doing what you love. He quotes ‘ if you think your missing out because you’re not drinking alcohol,…
Many teens turn to marijuana, prescription drugs, club drugs, alcohol or other substances during their teenage years. Seventy percent of high school students have had at least one alcoholic beverage, and they are often with their friends when they drink. Teens who drink or do drugs can develop addictions. No one sets out wanting to become addicted or chemically dependent. Addiction is not a character flaw or the result of poor willpower. It is a true biological response that fools parts of the brain into acting abnormally. Second, the different drugs and alcohol also flood the system with dopamine. This chemical creates feelings of pleasure and euphoria, which is the high. The first few instances cause a person to like the feeling and repeat behaviors to obtain it. With repeated or extended drug exposure, the brain structure changes. The amount of damage depends on several factors, including what chemicals were abused, in what quantities and for how long. Also…
Alcohol is probably the most common abused drug among college students. Most students will start drinking and partying on Friday night and not stop until Sunday morning. These students will consume dangerous amounts of alcohol in such a short amount of time. Some of these kids will consume so much alcohol that they get to the point of blacking out. These kids think that partying for three or four days straight is fun and the cool thing to do, but they do not realize that the amounts of alcohol they consume is dangerous to their body and mind. Alcohol consumption contributes to memory loss, learning difficulties,…
Every drinker has already at least some of the short term alcohol effects like a hangover or a bad night’s sleep. Long term effects are usually experienced when it is quite late. Heavy drinking results to a staggering walk, indistinct words and memory lapses. Upon drinking, one develops difficulties with their stability, judgement and harmonisation. One usually takes a gradual reaction to stimuli, a reason why drinking poses danger to driving. This is a result of the way alcohol alters the functionality of the central nervous system.…
“Social, psychological, genetic, and behavioral factors can all contribute to the disease” (Alcohol Addiction). Researchers have shown that alcohol addiction causes physical changes to the brain. Some symptoms of alcohol addiction are changes in friendships, avoiding contact with loved ones, and the dependence on alcohol. Addictions ruin the lives of the person themselves and other people around them. Alcohol is like a drug, becoming addicted can be destructive. Alcohol dependence is very common and has many negative consequences such as withdrawal. Some include hallucinations, seizures, fevers, and agitation (Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse). Kids who have parents who constantly drink will increase their chances of drinking alcohol.…
