Jacob Jankowski cannot remember his age but thinks he is somewhere between ninety and ninety-three. He lives in an assisted-living center because he broke his hip, and his family felt he needed help with his day-to-day living. He is sitting in the hallway and sees a group of residents gathering at a window. Curious as to what they are looking at, Jacob climbs out of his wheelchair and uses his walker to join the residents at the window. Down a block from the center, a circus is setting up. Jacob is so overwhelmed by the sight that he has momentary chest pains that cause other residents to call for a nurse.…
Vhiknukzark or commonly known as Zark, to those of inferior vocabulary, is a Kobold that lived with his tribe inside the cave system of Srazol Mountains. He was a hunter and defender of his tribe. He would go out and hunt the rich wildlife in the nearby forest, the Whispering Woods. When gnomes came near his tribe he made sure they left with a few arrows in their backs… if they made it out alive that is. Vhiknukzark was happy with his simple life of hunting, sleeping and eating. But that changed in the 10th year of his life.…
The article I discovered is an interesting one because it’s discussing a story I’ve never heard of before and is a perfect example of how some people are willing to ruin their career for money. One could consider Jeffrey Wertkin to be a successful person since he possessed a Ph.D along with a law degree from Georgetown University, before working in the Justice Department for over half a decade. This eventually led to him having a partnership with a top law firm in Washington named Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. For a lawyer, this was a dream come true before it all came crumbling down due to greediness on his behalf. He was charged with obstruction of justice and contempt of court after trying to sell a copy of a document that contained confidential…
Adversity can bring out the positive and negative sides in a person. In “The Proof of Worth,” Edgar Albert Guest demonstrates how challenges in life can help someone understand what he or she is capable of during a hardship. Similarly, “The Importance of Adversity in Growth and Development” written by Patrick Kohan exemplifies how children will never learn how to conquer an obstacle if they are always given assistance. Furthermore, Laura Hillenbrand’s novel, Unbroken, indicates that experiencing problems can affect the way a person’s body reacts and thinks about a difficult moment. Ultimately, the authors highlight that obstacles can be a complex or helpful task, as well as benefit people in the future when they need to know their true talents.…
The rattle of machine gun fire filled the air as the raiders hid behind a heavy steel desk. Sparks fell on Pierce's head as bullets hit the desktop and walls. When the clicking of empty mags sounded, the raiders opened fire at the vault guards. As the last guard fell, Pierce and his comrades went deeper into Vault 408. On the way the raiders picked up supplies, guns, and valuables. Once the cryo room was reached, a scarred man with a brown mohawk began directing the raiders. The man, Rik, was the leader of this group of raiders, and could order any one of these men to their deaths at a moments notice. Pierce had managed to keep on the good side of Rik as his right hand man, and had survived longer than most because of it.…
Another reason why we should study this book in the Overcoming Obstacles unit, is we join Jimmy on the journey of overcoming these obstacles. We see how he deals with loss, how he copes with family life, and how he handles failure. Elton, the author of the book, uses various techniques to convey how he overcomes all these obstacles. He uses humour to give us a funny insight on the daily problems. Humour also makes us, as the reader, enjoy the book even more.…
Throughout the past couple of months my fellow peers and I have been studying the topic ‘challenge’ and how it affects our lives and people around us. In our everyday lives we are confronting challenges, some are as small as walking up a few steps, and some are larger and more challenging that could be life or death circumstances.…
In My Sister’s Keeper and The Five People You Meet in Heaven, characters demonstrate the quality of perseverance. To persevere is to “persist in a purpose, idea, or task in the face of obstacles or discouragement”, according to The American Heritage College Dictionary. Characters in each book go about different ways showing perseverance throughout their lives. Yet no matter what, perseverance in the characters always comes down to the bottom line of never giving up.…
“Don’t be discouraged and give up just because it’s hard” (Kamkwamba, Pg. 275). William Kamkwamba, a man from Malawi, had to raise above all problems he encountered in his young life to be the successful man he is today. Several things drive people to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Although, William and I have lived two completely different lives we have both experienced, trouble managing time, an extreme life-changing situation, and excruciating physical pain; we were determined to face our problems so we were able to be successful.…
From reading this novel, I learned you should always follow your Personal Legend and keep working hard to succeed in life. Therefore, the novel’s main theme is to keep working hard, no matter how many obstacles you will encounter. After reading this book, the author wanted us to learn to never give up in life and to keep moving on our journey to reach our goals. He taught us that the obstacles you face may actually become helpful in the long run. Reading The Alchemist, taught me to work hard to meet my goals. This novel also taught me the obstacles I face can help me learn and can influence my Personal Legend. This novel not only gave me lessons, but also inspired me to work hard for my Personal…
How many lives are squandered, living life day to day, taking the easy road? While this type of life choice requires little effort, consequently, it yields little in return. As the inspirational author, Rick Warren encourages, we should all desire to live “A Purpose Driven Life” (Warren, 2002). The Gospel of Luke declares that to whom much is given, much is required (12:48). In analyzing Robert Frost’s, “The Road Not Taken,” (as cited in Clugston, 2011, sec. 2.2) and Eudora Welty’s, “A Worn Path,” (as cited in Clugston, 2011, sec. 6.5), there is a sense of purpose, producing perseverance in the journey of life of each of the protagonists. In each of these two literary pieces, Frost and Welty each present a perseverant individual that arrives at the end of their life’s journey, with much to show for their life choices. The theme of perseverance is strengthened and established through a comparative analysis of these two…
Everyone will behave differently when they face adversity. Some of them might give up easily, or they fight with their courage instead of accepting adversity and tragedy. In True Notebooks, Mark Salzman shows us how the boys deal with obstacles. If those boys can’t overcome obstacles, obstacles overcome them. Therefore, they must persist in the end when they face adversity. Sometime, some of them are lucky to overcome obstacles by persisting in the end, but many of them can’t overcome obstacles because of the situation, or they don’t even want to overcome obstacles.…
In life, everyone will face an obstacle at one time or another. This obstacle will only be overcome by showing grit. Angela Duckworth defined grit as passion and perseverance. In one instance, people had shown grit in article one “what it takes to be great”, “from rags to riches” and “Oakland senior’s marks of success: Top of college admissions”. The three articles to be discussed are “what it takes to be great”, “from rags to riches”, “Oakland seniors marks of success: Top of college admissions”.…
How perseverance is one of the most important things about surviving is it keeps you going. In the Story ¨Night by Elie Wiesel¨ it describes how Elie has to be strong with his dad knowing that his mother and sister are going to pretty much die. How this shows perseverance is when times are bad you need to work through it because it is bound to get better at any time. Another way that you need perseverance to survive is when you need to help someone like Elie did with his dad you have to help them no matter what happens. This proves that you need perseverance because when you're helping someone there's going to be someone there to try and stop you. Perseverance is also shown when Elie had to survive in the camp without his dad. This shows that when losing a loved one, you have to be strong. That's how perseverance is used in survival.…
When we read the biographies of great men and women, right from Albert Einstein to Edmund Hillary,we find that it is their strong will which made them overcome great difficulties or setbacks and find a way to march towards success. Similarly, a student may think to secure a first class in an examination is beyond his or her capacity. But if the student makes a firm resolve to achieve his or her goal and works towards it wholeheartedly, he or she is almost certain to achieve success.…
