[1] What do historians create with the history they account? History is a story that never ends. The events of the present in essence have already happened in the past. Historians try to make sense of the present by deconstructing the past. Only through analysis of the past can one understand the present. I remember playing cowboys and Indians as a child. I would always play the part of the cowboys, and consequently the cowboys always won. At the end of my day 's adventure I went to my parents to tell them of my conquest against the Indians. I made certain to include every detail of the battle -- from first charge to last saber stroke. History was made that day in my backyard with the green figurinesoldier on horsebackwhose defeat of the Indian nemesis forces was both courageous and honorable.…
History is everything but a great man’s biography. It’s what causes great men to rise, and sacrifice their lives for others. It’s what causes millions of deaths. In 1933, a genocide by Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany killed six million Jewish people. This was one of the deadliest genocides in the world. Its horrifying stories are still told today through the books like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Yellow Star, and much more. Similarly, Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli is another novel that keeps history alive to make sure the children of today understand their ancestors and cruelties of the past.…
“Lies My Teacher Told Me” is about what the author says really happened throughout history that many text books left out or made that incident appear better than it actually was. This book enlightens the readers of what really happened and was left out in high school history classes. He also tells about how well different minorities do in certain subject areas and gives an in depth explaination as to why they do not enjoy history. He blames the teachers for the students doing poorly because he says the teachers settle for less. Loewen discusses Helen Keller’s socialist views and how even the pilgrams…
After reading the article “The Betrayal of History” I was surprise to know the role of textbooks. I never thought that our school textbooks would play a major role in learning history. Texas and California are the two major states, which participate in printing the books and made it all the worse. These two states sold 20% of total accounts.…
While I sit in my US History college course, the only thing I am indebted about is the academically stimulating Professor, who sanctions quality analytical dialogue. If I was required to sit through this class, accepting the fabrications and omissions of the materials, I would have opted for a great amount of “sick days”, along with a lower grade. Upon analysis of the obligatory text, however, I am incessantly reminded of why I so abhorred the subject of history since age ten. I guess I’m just not the type of intellectual, whom likes to be fed a load of bullshit, and then told to swallow it holding a coerced smile, while dutifully citing it as a deliciously satisfying meal of facts. The American history academia is overflowing with emblematic propaganda, heaving with histrionic melodrama, in which teaches pupils to think as simple-minded, white-centric citizens. Here, you will read a comprehensive elucidation on precisely why this is so apparent.…
Growing up I always dreaded history, I never understood why we had to learn about the past. It wasn’t until a couple years ago that I realize that history is what shaped the world into what it is today and where I stand in this world. As a Mexican living in the United States history has really helped me understand why my family and I don’t have the same opportunity as white people. When I read the first 4 chapters to Lies My Teacher Told Me by James Loewen right away I was able to relate to what he was saying. Being a person of color learning history growing up I noticed that the history books only showed one point of view. A lot of the truth was covered up and that’s why now when I read something historical it’s very important for me to read…
Learning and obtaining the priceless knowledge that history has to offer is one of the greatest gifts a student can receive. History does in fact "harbor beauty", which is to be learned and digested. Whether it be through schooling, or merely a fascination with the past, history is one of the most important subjects when acquiring an…
Teaching History and the Consequences of it? According to, the chapter eleven from the book “ Lies my teacher told me” by James w. Loewen, under the title “Why is history taught like this? To answer for this question’s, it is better to see different directions as well as the perception of the of the teacher’s, the final goal of the responsible college or university or the giver institution, or the strategy of the education policy curriculums, why prefers or allowed to give this one sides negative image of history for college level students? The answer would be depends on the above hypothesis.…
The stories of history that we often make are formed from uninterested facts that seem cold and heartless. That are molded into epic dramas that show humanity of an event creating a martyr capable of rallying tired spirits and strengthening broken resolve of those under siege by an unrelenting enemy These stories are meant to teach lessons, but often have little based in fact. As legends are required to rally nations not just simple recounts of an event. It is the legend that makes an event significant. A legend can be change to appeal to its audience. Facts however, are stone unable to be shaped. As they lack the appropriate pathos to move the stubborn hearts and minds of many. One such story that became legend…
According to James W. Loewen in Lies My Teacher Told Me, American students enter college less knowledgeable about their own history than any other subject. American history is the least liked and worst remembered subject in American curricular. Loewen argues that history is the only subject one has to unlearn in college because high school presents inaccurate information to students. Who is to blame? Despite the indicting title, James Loewen does not appear to be blaming only teachers for student ignorance. Loewen blames textbooks, publishers, and instructors for students knowing too little accurate information, too much inaccurate information, and not caring about any information.…
History has been found to be the fundamentals of what we now know as modern civilization. Many times we hear students complain about why this subject is so important in their area of study or the profession was chosen. Now, let's see how history is essential for any occupation, personal growth, and society.…
While sitting in history class listening to my instructor’s normal lecture of American history one day, I take to notice a few of my classmates sneakily texting, doodling in their textbook, picking at their nails…In general, not even trying to look like they are paying attention or remotely interested. Why this fails to surprise me is because most individuals find history bland. However, little did my peers know history isn't a burden of rocks on the memory, but a brilliant radiance on the soul. History is an important subject to understand the sacrifices and struggles people went through, and if we don't acknowledge our mistakes from the past, we will unquestionably repeat them.…
Alexander the Great began to earn god-status because of his legendary accomplishments. Alexander did many things during his lifetime that just made other people pretty much sure that he was a god. In fact Alexander conquered the biggest empire of his time and claimed it for Macedonia.…
History, a record of past events and developments, which are usually in chronological order that define who and what we are today. Now days, history is changing so rapidly and life seems to be stuck in fast forward. Usually when people think of the word history, they often think of big events, when truly everything you do is making up history. Even reading this paper is history in the making. And as a human it is our duty to know and analyze our past to make sure repetition of our downfalls doesn’t happen. It is crazy to think about how different times are now than what they were in ancient times. But even back then things were very diverse. For example, Athens and Han China were like night and day. The way in which they ruled their…
Alexander was walking towards the store where he could get a katana, until he sees a Yu-Gi-Oh Card store. He walks into the store and by the time he got out of the store it was 12:00 P.M. and he had walked in there at 8:00 P.M. Alexander walks around town on a cold and pitch black night. “I can’t seem to find my apartment.” said, Alexander to a stranger. The stranger ignores him. He goes to a nearby convenience store and asks the cashier, “Do you know where Sunset Road is?” “わかりません。” (I don’t understand) said the cashier. He responded with “Come on you have to be kidding me, I DON'T KNOW JAPANESE!” and storms out only to get a brick from the side of the road and throw it at the window. He bolted as soon as he saw an officer charging at him.…
