Alex's Classroom Observation
Alex does not have a fix group of friends. He plays socially with many peers. However, he has a language delay as he shows difficulty in articulate words that he wants to express. According to Porter (2008), social competence skills are influence by the self-esteem and attitudes during interaction amongst children. Kostelnik et al (2015) indicated that socially competent children need to have the social skills and language abilities to connect with others. In Alex case, he will hit or push his peers if he cannot get the object he wants or they do not listen to him. This kind of aggression is frequent. These hurtful acts are related to Alex’s is not able to communicate properly with his peers especially during the free play. From his behaviour it seems that Alex needs help with his skills in social competence. Dodge at al. (2003) highlighted those children who likelihood of acting aggressively toward peers will face social rejection during future peers interaction. With this observation, it will be beneficial for Alex to improve his soft skills in the area of conflict management, negotiation and learn to be assertive.

He will become restless and start to fidget during group lesson times that require long hours of listening and even ending up poking his peers who sit around him. This causes disruptions to the lesson and conflicts amongst the peers. Booren, Downer and Vitiello (2012) indicated children’s interactions with teachers, peers, and tasks in early education classroom are key precursors of later academic and social success. In view of Alex’s difficulties with social competencies and expressive language, this could cause him not able to engage in the classroom lessons.     I must say, according to my observation in the scenario I really see two strategies that is being used to help the E.L.Ls. The strategies was used on Maria that just arrived in the class but has been there for only five months. What I observed was that the teacher has a student helping her and is making sure she is involved in all activities. This will help her build her social development skills. But the downfall is that her speech will not improve since the teacher is really not doing much to help her with her speech. But on a good note he is considering on getting her tested for her speech to make sure she does not have a disability. My second observation was from his E.L.L student, Mikhail. I really don’t see that he is using any strategy to help him when it comes down to his social skills. This might be because He has been in the states a lot longer. This is an advantage he has on Maria when it comes to social development skills.     I often see him bullying his friends, pushing them break, hitting them whenever he likes and also annoying them by singing loudly in class. The student read the book, Stegosaurus The Dinosaur with the Smallest Brain, by Elizabeth J. Sandell. The student pronounced every word correctly. Another saying he often repeats out loud often are, come on lets wash your hands. When the student says that, he does not go wash his hands.
