Eligibility Criteria
Alfie Scholars will be selected from a pool of diverse transfer students from community colleges. Diversity includes a broad range of people including those from diverse ethnic, racial, and non-traditional backgrounds, as well as those who have socioeconomic disadvantages, have physical or learning disabilities, and have overcome significant other obstacles.
An applicant to be an Alfie Scholar must have gained acceptance into Seattle University undergraduate programs through the normal transfer application processes and must have the following additional minimum qualifications:

• Two years of college credits (90 credits) and/or an A.A. degree by August 1, 2016
• A minimum undergraduate grade-point average of 3.5
• A minimum of 4 quarters completed at the time of application
• Leadership skills that will enable her or him to serve the community and foster civility in her or his chosen profession
Applicants must submit the following:
1. A completed application form.
2. A two-page reflective essay that demonstrates the applicant's thoughts on the significance of civility, the challenge of fostering civility, and how the applicant might work to foster civility in general or in the applicant's chosen field.
3. Two letters of recommendation that speak to the applicant's intellectual ability and capacity to act as a leader in fostering civility in general, if the applicant has not yet chosen a field, or specifically, in the applicant’s chosen field. One letter must be from a professor at the applicant’s community college.
4. After the application has been submitted, selected prospective Alfie Scholars will be interviewed by the selection committee.
Upon being selected to be an Alfie Scholar, students must sign a commitment to maintain good standing at the university, to participate in the academic programing, and to complete other requirements as determined by the program director.
Scholarship Award & Program Benefits
Scholarship amounts are awarded annually for two years. Scholars receive:
• $10,000 annual scholarship
• Academic support programming that prepares students for the increased academic rigor of a four-year university
• Opportunities for creating mutually reinforcing relationships
• Customized curriculum to develop leadership skills
• Preparation to become leaders to foster civility in their professions
Post-Award Requirements
Alfie Scholars will serve as role models of leadership in fostering civility in their respective academic and personal communities.
In addition, Alfie Scholars will be required to:
• Attend the Core Course: Philosophy of the Person – August 2016
• Attend the two-credit seminar: Leadership in Fostering Civility – 2016–2017 academic year
• Attend the Core Course: Ethics – August 2017
• Participate in extra-curricular programing
• Meet with the Alfie Scholars Director once each quarter
• Attend the 2016 and 2017 annual retreats
• Attend the 2016 and 2017 annual banquets
• Maintain good academic and social standing
• Regularly scheduled individual meetings with program staff
• Apply and maintain eligibility for other scholarship funding if applicable
• Allow staff to monitor academic performance and university records
