Alfred Hitchcock once said, “Violence on the screen increases violence in people only if those people already have sick minds.” Hitchcock created a new level of violence in mainstream cinema. Two of his films, Frenzy and Psycho, express ambivalence towards femininity using violence. I will demonstrate this ambivalence through an examination of both films using Tania Modleski’s article, Ritual of Defilement and Robert Sklar’s Death at Work: Hitchcock’s Violence and Spectator Cinema in order to prove that violence against women serves as a way to suppress women’s power in order to restore patriarchal order, touching on the fact of how Hitchcock confronts the audience’s pleasure in violence and how they identify with those on screen. The women in Frenzy, Psycho and many other Hitchcock films are stripped of their power by either killing being killed or categorized as whores. According to Tania Modleski, Frenzy reveals very clearly “violence against women is an inclination in a patriarchal society. Men’s hostility towards women is expressed in Psycho and Frenzy as well as the fear of the ‘female other’. In desperation to acquire mastery over the woman, lies the threat of the devouring mother, a familiar figure in Hitchcock. Frenzy shows the devouring mother as the cause of Rusk’s psychopathic behavior. By the time Frenzy was released, Hitchcock need do no more than place the mother’s picture prominently on display in the villain’s apartment, have him quote her on several occasions, and get her to pop her head out the window in a cameo appearance, a reference to relationship between Norman Bates and his mother” (Modleski, 316-317). Both films suggest that these mothers and their sons are stuck in an environment that is controlled by patriarchy.     In Robin Wood’s “The American Nightmare, Horror in the 70s,” it exposes the theory of how horror films are generated. According to Wood, horror films exemplify how repression comes in conflict with normality and brought to existence, and the effect it has on society. Repression is the rejection of thoughts or impulses that conflict with the standards of our society. Wood discusses many key points that our mind represses such as sexual energy, female sexuality, bisexuality, and children’s sexuality. In a horror film, the monster symbolizes either repressed feelings or the fears of society. The monster of the film also represents “otherness”, which is what society represses in one’s self and then projects onto another inferior part of society to be hated. Normality in horror films is “the heterosexual monogamous couple, the family, and the social institutions that support and defend them.” Society as a whole is a member of “patriarchal capitalist society” or “social norms.” Wood demonstrates that these components connect to make a horror film. He generated a basic formula to horror films with three variables: the monster, normality, and how they relate to one other. The correlation between the monster and normality are fundamentally the subject of the horror film. Wood also outlined the five recurrent motifs since the 60’s. These motifs are what society fears and represses. “Annihilation is inevitable, humanity is now completely powerless, no one can do anything to arrest the process.” Horror films embody the fears we have in ourselves and in society.     In her Newsweek article “TV’s True Violence” Meg Greenfield argues that excessive fictional violence desensitizes viewers to the image of violence they see on television. Her discussion about this subject “generates hypocrisy and confusion”: the coarsening impact of violence on viewers, the effect on children, the volume of the violence, and the harm of dulling our response to the real thing. Everyone knows that there is too much violence on Television and that the networks must take action. Sex and violence are mixing on the screen and are becoming a “single phenomenon” and everyone knows that this phenomenon can have negative effects on the viewers’ behavior. Greenfield reveals that this “coarsening” makes “the unthinkable just a little less unthinkable, a little more OK.” Two objections Meg Greenfield has, the first is not to the violence itself, but to the volume and the way it is presented on Television. In the history of art violence has frequently played a role in , literature, art, and for example in Shakespeare’s plays, but violence back then had actually meant something. The second objection to TV’s fictional violence is that it will affect the viewer’s reaction to the real thing, for instance, the images of the wounded kids in “Sarajevo” and in other massacres and wars. While every thinking person would agree there is too much violence on TV, the solution Greenfield offers is flawed.
