Alfred Tennyson's The Charge Of The Light Brigade
Honoring The Charge There is a famous saying by Nathan Hale, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” “The Charge of the Light Brigade” is a perfect example of soldiers that would do anything for their country. These soldiers were willing to attempt a suicidal run into enemy soldiers because it was their job. After the battle, the members of the Light Brigade were seen as failures, but not in the eyes of English poet Alfred Tennyson. Through the structure and themes of his work, he brought a sense of honor to those who fought. The imagery in this poem is another technique he used to bring out the reality of warfare and the horrors of the battle. By analyzing Alfred Tennyson’s poem, “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” the poet's admiration for the soldiers in the Battle of Balaclava is revealed. The Battle of Balaclava, also know as The Charge of the Light Brigade, was a battle between the British and the Russian during the Crimean War. This particular battle …show more content…
Through the repetition and rhymes in the poem, a reader’s attention is drawn towards the dangerous aspects of the battle. Tennyson’s vivid descriptions reveal just how terrifying the scene of war is whether a soldier is in the fight or just examining the field of a battle soon to come. The courage, honor, and loyalty of the everyday soldiers are demonstrated by their fearless charging and their following of orders without question. This poem was written to honor the soldiers of the battle who had their lives cut short through the pettiness and incompetence of their leaders. This soldier’s of this battle were seen as failures in the eyes of their country's inhabitants due to their defeat at the hands of the Russians. If there was more communication and clear directions would there have been a need to have the bravery of soldiers defended through a

In The Charge of The Light Brigade and Mametz Wood, both Sheers and Tennyson present similar ideas about war. The reader is given the distinct impression from both poems that the authors think that war is a waste of time, unnecessary and pointless. In Mametz Wood Sheers talks about "the wasted young" suggesting that these soldiers that have been found in the farmers field died before their time because of war and that they shouldn't have, that maybe their deaths were pointless. Similarly in The Charge of The Light Brigade, Tennyson says "someone had blunder'd" meaning that the death of these six hundred men was a mistake, a fateful accident and that it was a wasted that they should die because of other people's mistakes. However both present a unique and slightly different take on war. One is about the Battle of the Somme whereas the other is about the Battle of Balaclava.…

The two poems “The Charge of the Light Brigade” and “Vitae Lampada” are both from the 19th century; they are also both based on war. Lord Tennyson’s “The Charge of the Light brigade” tends to be more specific whereas Henry Newbolt’s “Vitae Lampada” doesn’t actually give information as to where or when the combat incident he wrote about on occurred. But, ideally, the two poems are both hugely patriotic and both express a traditional respect for bravery, honour, glory and for the their nation or “Patria”…

Leaders of conflict guide others into battle showing them that their best ideas may result in disastrous actions being made. In The Charge of the Light Brigade Alfred Tennyson reflects on the consequences of war for the whole of the British cavalry who were killed in the Crimean war. In Mametz Wood, Owen Sheers describes the rediscovery of lost World War 1 graves so that we can be reminded of what happened. Both Alfred Tennyson and Owen Sheers reflect on how fragile life is and that it can be wasted so easily due to war.…

The 25th October 1854 marked the day of the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War plus one of the most famous and ill-fated events in British military history, the so called ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’. Great miscommunication between commanders led to an error in military execution, the Light Brigade were mistakenly ordered to charge, although heroically, to their deaths. There is debate over the success or failure of the attack; some reports describe it a successful operation of war, although misguided. It is argued that if the Light Brigade has been supported then control of the Russian held guns could have been taken. In addition, it was thought that the courage the British demonstrated frightened the Russians who never dared to face them again on an open battlefield. The Battle of Balaclava is widely seen as a defeat due to the great human loss, however a military historian could see it as a Pyrrhic victory. The British regiments at Balaclava were granted battle honour, victory being a pre-condition, due to the achievement and exhibited courage of the Charge of the Heavy Brigade, the Thin Red Line and the Charge of the Light Brigade. The charge is now set in legend, it has been immortalised in writing through the works of the famed ‘military correspondent’ Sir W.H. Russell and the then Poet Laureate Lord Alfred Tennyson. In this essay, I shall examine the extent to which Tennyson replicates Russell’s prose account in terms of its ideological, emotional and stylistic qualities.…

“Anyone, who truly wants to go to war, has never really been there before” Kosovar. This not so famous quote, tells about how blind people were to the horrors and tribulations of war due to a force we call propaganda. “Dulce et Decorum est pro patria mori” is a controversial phrase used to describe the benefits of going to war. It has different translations but it basically states “it is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country”, this is just one of the many techniques a nation could use to shade the soldiers to the harsh reality of war. In this essay I will be evaluating two poems Dulce et Decorum est and The Charge of the Light Brigade. “Dulce et Decorum” est is a poem about war written by Wilfred Owen during World War 1 in 1917-1918. He was a soldier who experienced war first hand and wrote his poem with primary information. “The Charge of The Light Brigade” is also a poem about war that was written by Alfred Lord Tennyson, a poet Laureate during the 19th Century. Tennyson uses secondary information to write his poem. Both poems have a direct link to the quote but both have different perspectives of if it really is sweet and fitting to die for ones country. Within the evaluation of the poems I will be analysing Language, Form and Structure, Themes and Context for each poem and at the end I will sum up the main differences and similarities between the two poems.…

While Tennyson tried hard to glorify the Charge of the Light Brigade, he also attempted to express the large amount of casualties as well. Tennyson utilized metaphor and allusion to acknowledge the amount of death on the field without being overly graphic in his description. He used the phrase, “Into the jaws of Death/Into the mouth of Hell” repeatedly to further his point.…
