At first Dee wanted everything, but her mother could not afford it. Then once her mother “raised the money”(p.1058) for Dee to go to school she became very disrespectful towards her mother and sister. Dee thinks she knows everything, like everything in the world. She treats her mother and sister with no respect at all. She is “forcing words, lies, other folks’ habits…” (p.1058) down there throat, while the two of them are “....sitting trapped and ignorant underneath her voice” (p.1058). Dee is showing them that she knows everything
and how she thinks of them as “dimwits” (p.1058). Dee is so ungrateful towards her mother. Dee’s mother wanted the best for her daughter.
Once Dee comes home from school, she comes back with a boyfriend and when she was gone she also changed her name to Wangero. Dee thinks she knows everything after coming back from school. The reason for her name change was that the name was oppressing her. Dee has never been oppressed in her life. How would she know what that means. Dee talks about how her grandmother was oppressed so she does not want the same name. Deee says how she does not want to be “named after the people who oppress me”(p.1060) , but Dee was never oppressed in her life. She thinks she knows everything in the world. Dee changed her name because she was “oppressed” (p.1060). This shows the disrespect towards her family and especially towards her mother because her mother purposely picked that name.
Dee is very arrogant girl and thinks she knows everything. She treats her mother and sister with no respect and is very ungrateful.
