I am Alice , living with my father, mother and younger brother in the city of La Canada Flintridge. I just finished the 7th grade in the La Canada High School. I attended the La Canada Elementary from the 1st to 6th grade. Before that, I was in Towers Elementary School in Torrance.
I always try my best and strive for excellence. I have 3 A+s and 3 As on my 7th grade report card. All my 7th grade teachers awarded me Academic Excellence (English, Math, Science and Social Science) Certificate at the end of the school year. My strong area is math. I participated in the Johns Hopkins University Talent Search and was awarded the “Student of Exceptional Talent” in 2010. I was awarded the “Student of …show more content…
the Month” in February 2010 for outstanding citizenship and work ethics in class. Upon graduation from the La Canada Elementary School in June 2009, I received the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Performance. Since I was little, I have had a dream: I want to go to the best college in the country. My mom tells me if I stick to the goal and work hard, my dream will come true.
At school, I participate in the Mathcounts Club. I work together with other students to solve challenging math problems. This year was my first time competing in the Mathcounts Regional Contest representing our school. Next year, I will do it again. I joined the California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) as well. In CJSF, students contribute to the community by doing a total of ten service hours. I completed more than ten service hours, and it made me feel good to do something nice to our school.
I take part in many activities outside the school.
My favorite one is dancing. I started dancing at the age of 4. Since 2004, I have taken dance classes in Shin Dance Academy for 3 hours every week. I have earned a lot of medals and trophies from numerous dance competitions. I received the Platinum Award in 2006 “Showstopper” Dance Competition performing a solo, the Gold Award in 2005 and 2007 “Showstopper” for solos, and the Gold Award in the American Chinese Dance Association Dance Competition in 2005 and 2006. In 2009, I competed in the Chinese Youth Folk Dance Championship in Los Angeles and made it to the first place in the solo group for children younger than 12. This year, I performed with two other talented dancers in the Showbiz 2010 Regional Competition and our trio won the 1st place in Folkloric Category. I have performed in many Chinese cultural events, and the 2009 multicultural competition of the young performers “Colibri”. I also performed for the seniors at the Pasadena Senior Community Center. On June 17, 2010, I performed a solo dance in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory American Heritage event. I feel energetic and happy whenever I dance. An audience’s applause makes me feel rewarded for presenting a beautiful form of arts.
Besides dancing, I am also a Girl Scout. This year, our Troop 889 held a “Helping Hands Festival” to help Haiti after its devastating earthquake. We held game booths, craft sale, bake sale and yard sale. We raised more than two thousand dollars to Haiti with hard work from every scout and their
parents.
I go to Foothill Chinese School every Thursday afternoon. Before moving to La Canada, I took Chinese lessons in Evergreen Chinese School in Torrance. I like learning Chinese so that I can talk to my grandparents and understand Chinese TV programs. I have made a lot of new friends in Chinese school. I took part in the 2007-2009 Children’s Chinese Speech Contest organized by AM 1370 radio station in Los Angeles. In 2007, my team (Teresa Jiang, my brother and I) won the Grand Championship and Best Acoustic Award. In 2008, the comedy duet performed by my brother and I won the third place in the contest. In 2009, my Chinese school recited a Chinese story and won 4th place. Besides saying Chinese, I can also write Chinese well. I participated in the 2009 SCCCS Chinese Translation Competition and won the 3rd place. I also attended SCCCS Chinese speech contest and Chinese Character Festival.
I also like drawing and painting. I go to the U.S. Arts Education Center in Temple City every Sunday. I have learned how to sketch and paint with acrylic. I especially like landscape and abstract paintings. My art teachers have also taught me how to sketch a detailed drawing of still life pictures. In 2010, I participated in the Foothill Chinese School Artwork Exhibit, and my artwork was ranked among the “Top 10 Artworks.” I won the Industry Education Council (IEC) 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award for nice illustrated artwork for the school newspaper.
The musical instruments I play are piano and violin. In 2010, I completed the California Certificate of Merit Level 6 Piano Test with branch honors. I also learned to play violin in school and was part of the string orchestra at the La Canada Elementary School for two years.
Next year, I will be an 8th grader in the La Canada High School. I look forward to having another year of challenge and excitement. I will continue to work hard and to be better and stronger.
