Although the aliens in District 9 do not have the typical green skinned, antenna, bug eyed aliens like shown in most alien based films, they do however share the same thought that aliens physically do not represent human forms and have ugly exteriors, thus making mankind feel good about themselves, whilst watching the film. The extreme close up of the prawns face during the news feed in the beginning of the film, is used to emphasis the prawn’s appearance so as to highlight that they are ugly creatures, thus automatically making them ‘bad’. The weight of the aliens; introduces the idea that they are not as evolved as humans, as one could questions how a species of great numbers, can still be controlled by a species of a lot smaller numbers. This is shown in the high angled shot of MNU coming in to evict, shows the amount of shacks that the prawns live in. …show more content…
The aliens in Avatar are seen as more evolved, as their way of functioning and communicating neurologically.
This is shown in the high angled, long shot scene of the Navi connecting to the Home Tree to save Grace. The Navi also show a more evolved state through their physical and mental capacity, as the low angle of Jake exploring Pandora, emphasises the size and strength compared to him
Another film that could be used to show Avatar as more evolved is Men in Black. A film shot in 1997, where the aliens are of the typical cartoon styled, bug eyed aliens. This is shown in the opening scene with the eye levelled angle of a alien holding up a human head, thus emphasising the contrast of the reality of humans and the cartoon like effect of the aliens. The aliens are also shown as clumsy and not intelligent, as the panning long shots, in the beginning of the film, with the character J chasing down an alien, and the alien falling down more than
once.
During the film District 9, one sees Wikus spraying himself with a black liquid, which transforms him into a prawn. One sees the importance of him transforming, as his first physical change is with the extreme close up of the wraps being taken off his arm by the doctor, with the emphasis placed on his now exposed claw. The film also displays typical experimentation of aliens, shown through the camera panning, whilst Wikus is being wheeled into MNU headquarters, and indicates the extent of how much the humans experiment on the prawns to see what make them tick, and emphasises the fact that they do not care for the prawns.
The experimentation shown throughout Avatar is more evolved due to the transformation from human to Navi. As the technology needed for one to willingly turn to Navi, and have the ability to decide what they will look like as a Navi, needs to be hugely advanced and evolved. This is shown in the extreme close up shot of Jake’s face once he is the chamber, closing his eyes to waking up as a Navi and one sees the change but the huge similarities in both faces. The medical advancement towards the human anatomy is also hugely advanced that one sees with the promise of Jake regaining the use of his legs. The low angled shot of Jake climbing out of his wheelchair into the chamber, shows huge significance as it empowers the chair, and inspires Jake to work, to gain his independence back.
Based on the above mentioned Avatar is a more evolved Sci-Fi genre film, due to the filming techniques displayed, the aliens and the medical experimentation being displayed successfully.
