Alisha Akins
My partner, Alisha Akins, once said,” Life is not measured by the breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.” She is the eldest child in her family, and attended Mayport Middle School when she lived in Florida, but when she moved to Bakersfield, she attended Lakeside Middle School. She describes herself as weird, shy and outgoing. Her life is a unique part of her. When she’s outside of school, she likes to listen to music or hangout with her friends. The last book she read was The House of Seven Gables. Her all-time favorite movie is Just Wright, and her favorite meal would be ribs. She has an Instagram and plans to get involved at Independence through clubs and/or sports. Lastly, she defines the word respect as to care

In response to her accomplishments during her schooldays she said she was shy but did have goals, and worked hard in school to obtain good grades. Since she had two older siblings, they would walk her to school and help her with her weakest subject-math. The support she received from her mother, sister and brother helped her learn how to “sumar y restar”, which means to add and subtract. Mrs. Limon only attended school up to the 6th grade level. When I asked her how her youth compared to the youth now, she said it was not comparable. That the youth was more respectful and had “healthier” lifestyles. She also shared that she had many boyfriends and started having boyfriends at the age of 15, but the relationship she had with them was very innocent. We laughed when she confessed that out of all her boyfriends her husband was her favorite, and they married when she was 18 years old. During Erikson's fifth stage of development, adolescents are trying to find their true identity. I believe she was trying to find her true self through all her boyfriends, and she overcame that crisis when she met her husband. Mrs. Limon united in marriage at the age of 18 and had her first child at 19 years old, and three more every two years. Her most enjoyable stage of her life have been having her children and marrying her husband. She shared the the bond that she has with her husband is indescribable, and loves…

I am a young woman, getting older by the day. An adult who stops being an adult at 3:36 each weekday. I have that I’m happy with – thanks to Deborah. Sometimes my hair is as straight and sleek as a bullet train, and other days it is as rumpled and disheveled as a cheerleader’s pom-pom. I am comfortable with my looks and, just like Mom said, I’ve grown into my features. I am short. Petite. Vertically challenged. I am outspoken and opinionated, but shy in the same moment. I am organized – compulsively so at school, but messy to a point at home. I expect a lot from the people in my life and am disappointed when they don’t deliver.…

My world. It’s something completely different, it’s complicated, confusing and stressful but that doesn’t stop me or bring me down. My world, my life, my experiences had made me a bigger, better person. I’ve gone though things I wouldn’t even want to wish on my worst enemy. I’ve gone through things some grown adults have not even experienced in their lifetime. I mean a few people can relate here and there but I never tell my whole story. I would never want pity from people or someone thinking the worst or even looking at me differently. What I’ve gone through doesn’t make me a different person? I’m still me, Just a stronger me. I don’t want others to know my struggles or my weaknesses. I don’t want people to know that we have lived paycheck to paycheck. I don’t want anyone to know any of that. That’s not who I am. I’ve learned my strength from my mother. I guess you can say I’ve learned everything from her.…
