All About Me Research Paper
Let’s be honest here now, I am enslaved in more than one way. How exactly am I enslaved? I am enslaved through stereotyping, society and through my Type A brain. As a free person in America, who has never been discriminated against to my memory in my life yet; it is hard to see how I am enslaved in my daily life. However, I have been enslaved through how society has treated women, how I have been stereotyped for being a women, and also my over organizing brain. Society tells women to be at least 5’10, and only weight 120 pounds while in reality I’m 4’11 and range near that weight. Society makes women also believe that we need to be this blonde, tan, bombshell with large breasts who work out and are young. I’m none of these things except young. Society enslaves me by saying it doesn’t matter if I’m one of the smartest people on the earth, I have to be attractive to actually matter in a man’s world. Society’s perception of the way women show look not only enslaves me, but puts me in danger of mental and physical issues. The dangers are eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia, but also …show more content…
Becoming enslaved to the societal views of the perfect Barbie like women’s body is like a death sentence to me. If a women who is 5’10 should be 120 pounds then I should probably be 85 pounds this causes me to become judgmental with my own features. Also, the jokes of sexist men enslave me in trying to make me seem weak and defenseless. It hurts me in ways of not letting me not have an even playing field in terms of politically, economically and in the man’s world. Finally, I’m a slave to the Type A brain of how I over stress about deadlines and things that will cause me not sleep without planning out my entire day. I’m a slave to society and

A hypocrite is defined as a person who pretends to have virtues, morals, religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess; especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs. Jefferson in some ways could be categorized as a hypocrite. He evangelized liberty and freedom for all, yet did not grant this freedom to his slaves. Liberty is defined as freedom from arbitrary or despotic government or control. Africans, hispanics, and other minorities were enslaved and treated as property rather than people. This mentality plagued nations for centuries; so much so, that owning slaves was a social standard that demonstrated a person’s ranking and affluence. Due to this social standard, it is in no way surprising that…

In this “Culture of Me” society, everything is Me-based. In the video “It Is All About Me,” the author mentions that this generation is known as “Gen Me”; it comes from the formula Gen X + Y +Z. People from this generation are known to be more confident, assertive, feel more free and equal, and have highest self-esteem compared with previous generations. However, these people tend to possess greater possibilities of having depression, suicide, loneliness, and isolation at the same time. Baby boomers of this era are also more interested in immediate gratification and are more focused on themselves. They endeavor to grab attention or seek admiration as much as possible to satisfy their self-esteem; however, this deformed individual’s decision-making skills and relationship with others. What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

Women are also often objectified in particular, within men’s magazines, where a woman’s physical attractiveness is used to sell products or promote a brand. You can’t help but ask yourself why companies purposely choose to promote women as sexual objects within their advertising? You may have heard the phrase “sex sells” and sadly, it really does as it means large revenues for businesses. Through this society are unintentionally contributing to the objectification, sexualisation and exploitation of women in the media as we are allowing these companies to promote such a product through this representation of women and taking advantage of women by only focusing on their physical attractiveness rather than the qualities inside. Beauty should be a source of confidence, not anxiety. Us girls have the power to help the next generation of girls develop a positive relationship with the way they look, helping them to raise their self-esteem and confidence as well as reach their full potential without the pressures of women in the media shown to suggest the standards of beauty. Unattainable beauty. Young females need to learn how to overlook these negative messages the media is sending us in order to be happy within ourselves and not strive to be the media’s portrayal of “perfect”. We should be more grateful of our natural beauty. Having a negative view of our appearance impacts the choices in the friends that we make, the jobs we apply for, it impacts everything. It couldn’t be more critical to your happiness. We as young women spend a significant amount of time analysing and trying to fix the things that aren’t quite right and we should spend…

I did not even know that there were different types of slavery. The one that I was really aware was of the debt slavery. It was the first time that I had heard about chattel slavery and contract slavery. When I first read about contract slavery the first thought that came to mind was, “ Who would sign a contract to be a slave?” But as I continued to read about it, I started to understand that being a slave is not a choice. It is something that is forced upon a person. Some people get kidnapped into slavery and have no hopes in getting out. Some children as young as twelve fall into this horrible…

Slavery is a condition that has been prevalent. It has been prevalent in the sense that it’s as deeply rooted in human system since time immemorial. Many would contest that it is a condition that the human society is done and over with. But looking at a macro level at the issue, mankind is not yet free from this problem. That up to this computer age, slavery still exists - in all corners of the world and all races are victims of it. Contemporary slavery does not only equate to helping in the household and doing chores for the master. In some cases nowadays slaves are slaves of their own. Slavery today comes in different faces. If slaves during…

We see stereotypes everywhere; from the news, to tv shows, to commercials, to movies, to magazines, and even in social media. The media alone put so much emphasis on attractiveness that they are reinforcing this idea that it is beauty and not brains that matter. This results in young girls being unhappy with the way they look. They start to compare and contrast their looks to what they see in the media at such an early age and I believe this is what contributes the most to negative body image. Being told that you are not tall enough, or short enough, or skinny enough, or fat enough, is detrimental to not only our physical health but our mental health as well. In the media, we see successful women being undermined and rather than focusing on their accomplishments, the media decides to focus on her appearance. One example was of a comment made by President Barack Obama about California Attorney General Kamala Harris. He stated that “You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake. She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country.” This comment by one of the most powerful and influential men in the world, sadly…

This article focuses on the Western idea of what a woman’s body should look like and the insecurities and struggles that it creates. The perfect body for a woman, in our society, is slim, tall, tan, and almost impossible to attain. The article speaks to the women who struggle with weight issues and how they have to deal with the pressures of the media and the expectations of society to have that perfectly slim and golden body. This reading shed light on how much society teaches women to develop self-hating relationships with their body and encourages women to deal with their “problem areas”. This article reminded me of how often I struggle with my body image and how often I feel guilty for eating the wrong foods and not working out enough. This article really made me realize that nobody judges you more harshly…

    Sexual Abuse In America

When most are questioned on how slaves were mistreated, it is usually along the lines of getting whipped, chained, and lynched. Although this is not necessarily incorrect, the modes of abuse the slaves of America underwent are much deeper than that and are far more complex as some forms of abuse are not seen to the naked eye. Apart from physical violence, slaves were also constantly made to feel worthless about themselves through several actions that made slaves feel like they did not even own their bodies at times. This sense of degradement and physical powerlessness was used by slave owners to keep power over their many slaves as they did not feel deserving of their basic freedoms since they were not “equal humans”, as ridiculous as that…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. A question such as “who am I”? Really gives me the opportunity to differentiate and express who I really am and who I can be. I am not a complex person who thinks the world is against me, nor am I overly sophisticated “know-it-all” who doesn't take time to pay attention to my surroundings. I can't say that I am like every other person because there are certain things that make me a unique individual. What I can say is that I am progressing towards a brighter future.…
