Discuss the dramatic tradition in Kenya.
Drama is a Greek word meaning “action”. Drama can be defined as a literary composition involving conflict, action, crisis and atmosphere meant to be acted by players on a stage before an audience. The actors, dialogue, setting, plot, actions, stage and the spectators are all important ingredients to cook a drama. Drama is often combined with music and dance. There are different forms of drama which have taken birth in different parts of the world. Kenya, Africa, is a country with a rich dramatic tradition.
First of all, music is an important branch of the dramatic tradition in Kenya. Kenya is home to a diverse range of music styles, ranging from imported popular music and afro-fusion to traditional folk songs. The guitar is the most popular instrument in Kenyan music, and songs often feature intricate guitar rhythms. One of the most famous guitarists of early 20th century was Bonie Makie. Popular music in the past could be divided in two parts namely the Swahili sound and the Congolese sound. Nowadays, newer varieties of music have arisen which are mostly derivatives of modern hip hop, rap and seggea.
Furthermore, we have the Kenyan literature. Kenyan literature describes literature which comes from the African country of Kenya. Kenya has a long oral and written literary tradition, primarily in English and Swahili, the two official language of the country. One of the best known pieces of Kenyan literature is Utendi wa Tambuka, which translates to The Story of Tambuka. Written by Mwengo, the epic poem is one of the earliest known documents in Swahili. Kenya has various great authors and numerous authors of European background also wrote or based their books in Kenya. The best known of these include Isak Dinesen, whose “Out of Africa” was the basis for the popular film starring great actors.
