The novel, All Quiet on the Western Front is the harshest story about war ever written. This novel was written by Erich Maria Remarque, based on his real life experience about World War 1. It tells a story about a group of companions at war and how they live their life everyday there. After analyzing the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, readers realized that almost all the characters were either very noble or not noble at all. The one character that stood out of all the character for being a noble man was the narrator, Paul. He is the most noble for being loyal to all his companions, for being sensitive to others and for being selfless in difficult times.
One of the reasons why Paul is considered the noblest character is because of his loyalty towards people. First, in the beginning of the novel, one of Paul’s friend Kemmerich is badly injured and had to have his leg amputated, sadly things are getting any better for Kemmerich and in the course of time he eventually dies. Paul describes himself as “wretched with helplessness” (Remarque 30), and even though he was like that, he stayed with his friend until his very last seconds. This shows that Paul was loyal to his friendship with Kemmerich no matter how hard it was for him. Likewise, when he is injured with Kropp and they are on their way to the hospital, Kropp has a fever on their way to the hospital and has to stay at a Catholic …show more content…
First, Paul swears on “everything that is sacred” (Remarque 181) to him for Kemmerich’s mom that her son’s death was painless and fast even though he knows it was Kemmerich suffered a lot through it. Many people wouldn’t consider this as a selfless behavior because Paul is not a very religious man, but seeing that Kemmerich’s mom is religious woman he technically did not care about anything but insuring that Kemmerich’s mother was at peace with her son’s
