The narrator of this story is a young German teenager that was manipulated into enlisting in the army in World War I. The new soldier begins his story with his friends by his side, and as the war progresses, he loses them all. When Paul is offered to return home for a short couple weeks, he jumps at the opportunity. However, during the duration of his stay, he has an epiphany about his life. He realizes that he should have never gone home to his dieing mother and the rest of his family. Paul's revelation is that his real family is the people that were by his side throughout the war- his comrades.
Paul's friends in World War I helped him too. They helped him in ways that a family would help each other. All day long they would protect each other and make sure that no one would get hurt. When a man would get wounded, they took care of him and physically carry him to safety. In the man's dieing hours, his friend's would take any notes or letters that he may have for his family. Even when they were on their deathbeds, the men would still consider the well-being of each other by handing down their combat boots to the next comrade. So even though a man would be in the worst position, he would still take into consideration the others around him.
For Paul, his friendship with his war buddies was what kept him alive. He was a guy that felt like he had absolutely nothing to go home to and that war was the only place that he could truly
