All The Time

All the Time? Forget It! The student legislature has recently proposed a campus-wide referendum on the issue of twenty-four hour visitation in the dormorities. Even though the referendum will be non-binding, I hope that those students who value their privacy and study time will come out and send student government and the university administration a message by voting NO. Although twenty-four hour visitation in the dorms would be convenient for some individuals at times, it would cause problems that far outweigh these conveniences. Certainly the biggest problem would be the resulting lack of privacy for dorm students. Most college students like to relax in nightgowns, T-shirts or underwear in their rooms and halls when they are studying late at night, or in the mornings when they have just gotten out of bed. No matter how “liberated” we are, not many of us are going to feel comfortable doing that in the presence of members of the opposite sex. If twenty-four hour visitation is allowed, there will be both males and females in the dorms at all times of the day and night. No one will be able to venture outside her room, even for a minute or two, in nightgown or pajamas. How would you like to get dressed every time you want to go to the bathroom? Consider also the problems that are going to arise between roommates. Suppose a girl has her boyfriend in her room late at night. What’s the roommate going to do about undressing to go to bed or doing other personal things? Suppose she wants to study? What then? It is no use saying, “Well, people can work things out.” The fact is there is going to be friction and hard feelings. Who needs it? The level of noise in the halls is already bad enough. Every night there are always some people who have big tests to study for or papers to write, and of course there are always others who have no work to do for the next day.
