In her poem “To be of use” Piercy uses figurative language to express that hardworking individuals allow our world to progress forward. She believes that without these people our world would not be where it is. Piercy compares hard workers who “harness themselves” to their roles with an “ox to a heavy cart.” Connecting the two allows the reader to interpret that as oxen pull their wagons with perseverance, industriousness, and consistency, hard working individuals pull the world forward by fulfilling their duties to society with the same qualities. Piercy explains that when hard workers commence their labor they also “pull like water buffalo, with massive patience.” This allows one to see that though these individuals might work continuously…

"Compare and contrast the characters of Jack and Ralph and discuss the way that the rivalry between them develops in the course of the novel." By comparing and contrasting the characters of Jack and Ralph it allows the reader to fully understand their characters and how each develops throughout the novel. Once this has been achieved the reason the rivalry occurs becomes evident and the novel's most important qualities and themes emerge from these two characters. It is then that we are able to see why Ralph and Jack's friendship can never develop into anything but rivalry.

Throughout the novel we see that Ralph and Jack share similar qualities, but there is a great difference in the way they use these attributes to benefit both themselves and others. Ralph uses his power to create a democracy, where each person has the right to voice their opinions and ideas. "I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking...and he won't be interrupted." The conch becomes a symbol of the right of a speaker to a fair hearing. While Jack uses his authority to produce a fascist, hostile environment where he controls the doings of his tribe. "Tomorrow we shall hunt" and "He said we weren't to let you in." Whilst both characters have the chance to exercise their power, both do so in a disparate way, with Ralph aiming to benefit the group as a whole, and Jack himself profiting from his actions. Ralph and Jack begin the novel with similar beliefs, both wanting to implement rules. "I agree with Ralph. We've got to have rules and obey them." Ralph concentrates on being rescued and Jack goes along with this taking on the responsibility that he and his choir will mind the fire. "We'll be responsible for keeping the fire going-", but while Ralph remains focused on being rescued, Jack's new-found interest in hunting leads him to forget about rescue. "Jack had to think for a moment before he could remember what rescue was. ‘Rescue? Yes, of course! All…

The movie “Much Ado About Nothing”, though similar to the original play by William Shakespeare, has subtle differences. Although the dialogue in the movie is the same as the original play, the settings and emotional intent are better represented in the film. So, the overall meaning of the story isn’t diminished but preserved and enhanced. In Summary, the movie is a good representation of the original play that William Shakespeare would be proud of.…

In this passage of “Lord of The Flies”, William Golding uses tone and intense imagery to characterize Jack. “Their bodies from throat to ankle were hidden by black cloaks which bore a long silver cross on the left breast and each neck was finished off with a hambone frill…the boy who controlled them was dressed in the same way though his cap badge was golden.” (19) This description of Jack is important because it represents his significance in his group and foreshadowing the role he plays on the island, a leader with dominance. He has a gold badge because he is the leader of the choir back home and still maintains order on the island. “When his party was about ten yards from the platform he shouted an order and they halted, gasping, sweating, swaying in the fierce light. The boy himself came forward, vaulted on to the platform with his cloak flying,” (19) Imagery in this quote is used to show the nature of Jack’s authority among his peers and confidence in his role as leader. “Inside the floating cloak he was tall, thin, and bony; and his red hair beneath the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness.”(19) Golding’s description of Jack’s features shows us that his personality burns through to his looks, giving off a serious and irate figure that influence his interactions with other characters in the book. “Out of this face stared two light blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to anger…The group of boys began to scatter from close line. The tall boy shouted at them. “Choir! Stand still!” (19-20) The tone of the first sentence shows the uneasy anger that Jack contains within his character. His voice shows ferocity in his instructions and the way he keeps discipline in his group. The tone of Golding’s description is significant because it displays Jack’s character when first introducing him and gives a more riveting start…

Jack the Ripper is one of the most infamous names in the history of mass murderers. There are many other people who have killed far more people than this mysterious figure, but have been long forgotten. Jack the Ripper is only credited with the murder of five prostitutes but his legend still lives on almost one hundred thirty years later. But why? A few likely reasons have to do with the sheer heinousness of his crimes. His victims were not merely stabbed, shot, or even beaten to death. The title “Jack the Ripper” was earned in the most horrible of ways. Jack the Ripper did not just snuff out a life with a knife, he meant to humiliate the women that the ruthlessly mutilated. He seemed to have a deep hate for the entire female gender.…

The idea that an individual is capable of reaching any dream that they wish for, so long as they strive to the best of their ability, is one commonly shared. Parents are known to encourage their children by sharing the concept that by working hard you can achieve anything. However, an individual is not necessarily capable of achieving any goal they wish; we have all been limited as human beings and have a certain capacity to achieve. Through the wide collection of stories and accounts in ‘Inquiry: Questioning, Reading, Writing’ by Bloom, White and Borrowman and other supporting texts, it is evident that hard work does not enable an individual to be anything they want to be.…

The novel " Lord of the Flies" focuses on the conflict that exists between two competing impulses that Golding, suggests exist within all humans; these being the instinct to follow the rules, act in a peaceful manner and comply to moral commands compared to the instinct to act violently in order to gain control over others and to satisfy our own greed and personal desires. The conflict exists within the novel in several forms; law and order vs. anarchy, civilization vs. savagery and the basic term of good vs. evil. Golding uses these themes consistently throughout the novel, clearly associating instinctive savagery with evil and the instinct of civilisation with good. The representation of this lies in Ralph and Jack, the two central characters in the novel; Ralph is the protagonist representing order and civilisation while Jack is the antagonist, who represents savagery and a desire for power. Lord of the Flies is an allegorical novel with Golding conveying his ideas symbolically through these characters.…
