I recently read a dictionary’s definition of the verb ‘bully’ as “[to] use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants.” (MW Dict.) The article titled “Defining Bullying Down” by Emily Bazelon describes how the issue of bullying will never be solved if we continue to describe such a wide array of behaviors as bullying. Bazelon states that since it’s common to label everything from schoolyard teasing to harassment and intense violence as bullying, we can’t teach victims and bystanders how to stop it. Studies have shown that the best way to stop bullying is to deem it unacceptable. By shaming the behavior itself, we embarrass the perpetrator so they will think twice before doing…
Bullying is a prevalent behavioral issue among adolescents. It can be defined in terms of any and all forms of aggression where one is targeted and is repeatedly, physically, or verbally harassed. This type of behavior, whether it is the bully or the one being bullied, can lead to long and short-term effects on the mental wellness of a still developing adolescent.…
Visual Rhetoric Essay Rough Draft Bullying is something that most people have experienced whether it was directed towards them or a peer; bullying has increased over the years with the help of internet access becoming more commonplace and therefore more proactive measures need to be taken to stop it. From standing up against a bully, to telling an adult, or simply being a friend to the victim and letting them know it’s going to be fine, demolishing bullying will be the result of a group effort as argued in the visual. The visual is eye catching and intriguing for the viewer because it depicts how harsh words that point out one’s flaws can hurt as it symbolizes how a person might carry those words long into adulthood and suggests that we, as a society, must come together in order to completely demolish bullying.…
In the visual poem To This Day by Shane Koyczan is about bullying. There is a picture in the video of a girl with a lion head, a skull and a lot of lines around her head. The lion head represents what she thinks she looks like because of what the people call her. The skull represents all the people thinking about harming themselves because of the names they’re being called. The lines around her head symbolize everybody bullying her and she cant get a break. In conclusion these symbols symbolize the overall effect bullying can have on a…

Bullying has been a problem for a very long time; however in these present times bullying is becoming an epidemic. Maybe the reason behind this is the new occurrence of social media in our society, and the new strategies used by bullies to harass there victims. When I reflect on my adolescent years, I remember racing home from school each day, eager to meet up with my best friend so we could just “hang out.” In a sense, not much has changed for adolescents today; they are still just as eager to socialize with their friend's. However, now they don’t meet up at each other’s houses and hang out in their neighborhood, the way my best friend and I use to. Instead, they hang out together online and their neighborhood resides in their smartphone. This is the message that is conveyed in chapter two of the book, Bullying Beyond the Schoolyard by Sameer Hinduja and Justin W. Patchin. In this chapter, the authors move away from discussing what cyberbullying entails in pursuance of looking at some of the places…
In “Bullying as True Drama,” writers Danah Boyd and Alice Marwick describe how adults need to listen more to the dialect of young people during discussions of bullying. Upon hearing the story of a 14-year old boy committing suicide after being mercilessly bullied, they felt compelled to write the article for the New York Times in 2011. Their desire was to communicate toward concerned adults the differences between their thoughts and the teenagers. By sharing their research, they wanted adults to see the need to listen more carefully to what was being said by teenagers.…
‘‘After nearly 15,000 students were suspended, for bullying in the 2008-2009 school year’’ according to source 2 in the story ‘’Tales of Bullying’’ written by Modigliani Laura. There are a lot of people bullied they need to be stopped, every day there are lots of kids bullied. A bully is worse than a bystander because bullies hurt people’s feelings, they could cause someone to commit suicide, and usually are suffering from something from their personal life. ‘’The rise in teen suicide kids were once able to put bullying behind then after leaving school at the end of the day’’. ‘’ The reason kids bully is because according to Source 1, bullies might have a problem at home, angry, or hurt about something. One such example is a child…
Bullying in schools has become a prominent issue in education over the last decade. This essay will consider this issue from a personal, theoretical and analytical perspective. Firstly, I will scrutinize over the difficulty of arriving at a common definition of bullying. I will look at ways in which lines are blurred for academic theorists to decide on a clear, universal definition of the social phenomenon of bullying and then continue on by reviewing my personal experiences of bullying through my education. Secondly, I would like to consider bullying as a social and educational issue brought to light by constant media coverage indicating the way the media can add ‘fuel to the fire’ by constructing…
I agree with the message being conveyed in this cartoon. As a student, I am a witness to acts of bullying almost every day. It is said that every 1 in 7 Students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying. Bullying is an escalating issue that is often overlooked by most adults and other children. Many so-called ‘bullies’ don’t realize what they’re doing is cruel, and hurts. I and likely many others believe that, if enough awareness is raised about bullying, the issue may be able to be put to rest. Children should not have to feel the need to hide from those that should be nothing but kind to them.…
People can influence the way others think about themselves internally and externally. If people didn’t bully, everyone could express their true self. In the book, “Wonder,” Auggie gets bullied by many people and it makes him feel ugly and not wanted. If others would’ve treated him kinder, he may not have covered his face when in public. Bullying’s negative actions can tear others apart rather than build…
The topic I have chosen resonates with me personally as I have experienced it firsthand. I also think it is a topic that many can relate too. I know a lot of people have either been bullied, been the bully or witnessed it themselves. I have chosen bullying and how it is a social deviance. Bullying cane be defined as the use of power and aggression to cause distress or control another. Bullying itself manifest in all ages, from children in grade school all the way through adult hood. I have seen it and the effects of it, no good comes from bullying. I also know that while yes it can stem from some sort of discrimination it does not always target a certain race, sexual orientation…
