Androgenetic Alopecia Androgenetic alopecia is a common condition in both men and women that deals with hair loss. It is estimated that 35 million men in the U.S. are affected by androgenetic alopecia. Hair loss patterns in both men and women differ. Firstly, men experience hair loss beginning above the temples until a “M” shape has formed from a receding hairline. In addition, men experience thinning of the hair near the top of the head that could potentially lead to either partial or complete baldness. In contrast, women experience hair thinning all over the head without a receding hairline. It is uncommon for women to have complete baldness from androgenetic alopecia. The main gene involved with this disorder is AR gene. Many environmental factors are believed to be possible causes for this genetic condition, but none have significant factual evidence. It has been determined that Androgens are the main hormones that are involved in causing hair loss. It is the AR gene that plays an important role in providing a blueprint in production of androgen receptors. It still remains uncertain when examing the factors that induce patterened hair loss in both men and women. Analyzing recent research done in this field is a key to determine what can aid in preventing Androgenetic alopecia. A study was done to control and decrease the amount of (DHT) dihydroxy testosterone level in males to treat Androgenetic alopecia. The main goal of the experiment was The prescribed medication used included 1mg Finasteride, which is an inhibitor for DHT. The experiment studied forty-five males within the same health and age category that were diagnosed with Androgenetic alopecia. The males were then split into two groups. The first group was given a topical form of Finasteride and a placebo pill. The second group was given a placebo topical and a Finasteride pill.
