Alpha Upsilon Zeta Scholarship
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Alpha Upsilon Zeta Chapter 2017 Scholarship Essay

I value commitment, persistence, integrity, and service. Throughout my life, I have witnessed how commitment and success are correlated. Through commitment, I have learned that I am able to accomplish short-term and long-term goals through hard work. Although commitment is inarguably important, it is also imperative to have persistence. I strongly believe that hands-on service, engagement and leadership opportunities for young people cultivate true leaders for world’s future. While I am studying at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, these values will be deeply instilled in me, and they will assist me in the activities that I will become involved in on campus and within the community.

I have been an active participant in community service opportunities with clubs within my school, such as the National Honors Society and Key Club. I also volunteer at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library weekly. I will continue this work by joining many clubs and organizations that are dedicated to community service. I also plan to continue to volunteer at the library.

Community service is vital to the life and survival of all communities. It is the role of all citizens to stand up and to be active members of their communities whether it be through activities, such as volunteering at retirement homes, schools, or local churches. Through my continued efforts to serve my community in college, I hope that I am able to benefit my community. Whether it be those who utilize the public library or little kids in grade school that need assistance with their homework, I will surely be able to serve

One example of helping people around me was as captain for this year’s Park Girls Varsity soccer team. In my role, I had to help motivate the team, and help to build and fuel team spirit – both things that I really enjoyed. In addition, I have also been focused on helping my community. A few years ago when my Dad and I took a trip to India, I was able to help out at a school that my grandfather had started and work with the students in their classes. This experience inspired me to find ways to give back here in several different ways, both big and small. In sixth grade, I ran to be a representative on the Park School Service Council. I have continued in this role for the past two years, and this year, I was elected by my classmates to be a co-Head. This fall, I led an effort where the school made placemats for the residents of the Pine Street Inn, a homeless shelter in Boston, for Thanksgiving. What I loved most about this effort was it allowed all the grades to be involved, and for kids to do something more hands-on rather than just give a donation. And while it was a small gesture, the Pine Street Inn staff shared that it had a meaningful…

One activity that reflects my personal commitment to community service is Totem Tutoring. Totem Tutoring is a place where students at Mountain Pointe can come and be tutored by other students who are knowledgeable in specific subjects. Initially, I started tutoring at Totem because I was unknowingly in room where it was taking place, and a student asked me for help understanding chemistry. Once I discovered that I was unwittingly participating in the program, I decided to continue my involvement as a way to give back to student body and hopefully brighten someone’s future. Consequently, I have been a tutor of math, science, and Spanish at Totem Tutoring for the past two years. Due to the nature of Totem Tutoring, there are times that tutors…

The skills that I have gained through community service will be beneficial to Seton Hall University by me having experience by working with different people in different environments and settings. A dilemma that I have faced in my life is extending my horizon. Definitely doing community service has helped me open up and work with people I have never met before so I had the opportunity to push myself and do what I normally wouldn't do and it has helped me tremendously. A local concern of mine is the drug epidemic in my town. It is not only a danger to the ones who are doing it, but to the others around them whether that be their family, neighbors or a stranger that just so happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Its importance to…

A wise person once said, “If you light a lamp for someone else, it will also brighten your path.” This particular quote has helped me realize that not enough teenagers are helping their community become a more desirable place to live. Implementing community service into the senior project outline as a requirement would ultimately benefit the students and the community. Not only will the students become more aware of the activities that occur in their community, but they will also have a greater sense of self.…

Albert Einstein, one of the smartest men to ever live, is quoted saying “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” This is achieved through striving to uplift those around you with volunteering. Anything from cleaning up garbage to offering companionship to elderly and disabled people is a way to change the world, bit by bit. However, no single person can change the world on his or her own. There must be a constant effort from all of those that support this belief. Some believe that the best way for this to be accomplished is through mandatory community service implemented through schools, charities or churches. Although community service can be extremely valuable in the development of both character and academics, some believe the negative effects of forcing students to participate by making a set amount of service a requirement for graduation could offset the benefits.…

Though, the concept of community service is not very new its importance has developed in the past few years. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that engage and hold millions of young people all through the world. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth are involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include; social service organizations, nonprofit providers and associations that engage both young people as well adults as volunteers; youth development organizations, after-school programs, and faith-based organizations. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society. Some people ask, “Why is community service such an important quality and trait for a person to posses?” Without community service people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back. Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Community service is not a responsibly or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. Basically, community service is a way for a person to give back to a community in which they live. There are many ways of giving back to the community; it can include tutoring local elementary students, mentoring local high school students, collecting items for charity, or just simply cleaning up a park. One of the main benefits of community service is that it builds a person’s character. It helps you to work on skills of being able to communicate with people, being able to work on a team, and being able to take on leadership role; all of these being skills that a person can use throughout their entire lives.…

Community service is important in ones life, but not important enough to make it a requirement to graduate. I believe that when someone does community service, it should be because he or she wants to. Community service shouldn't be forced upon ones life, but it should be encouraged to do. Forcing people into doing things sometimes tends to make them think less of that thing.…

Community service is a very important factor when it comes to improving the society. It shows how much care you show to the community when it comes to helping out the ones that are in need. As being a member of the community, I try to help out and support others as much as I can. Although community service can be very time consuming, I feel that helping out someone in my community that is in need is much more important, since the best thing a person can do is donate their time to someone. The place that I have chosen to do community service at is Chang’s Learning Center located on 17th Avenue and Bath Avenue. This place has given me a lot of experience and a wonderful time helping out the little kids that needed help with their homework.…

The concept of requiring community service of college students as a requirement for graduation is based on the idea that communities and individuals can be helped in their development through volunteer service. Community service provides the opportunity for students to share their knowledge, skills, and abilities with someone who might not have benefited from such actions otherwise. Community service should be a requirement for college graduation because it helps to alleviate problems of society, positively molds a student's manner of thought, and helps the student achieve career goals in his or her future. When college students devote even minute amounts of their time to the community, their intelligence, compassion, and expertise can influence society in many ways that are greatly needed. There are many places in which educated help is needed, like organizations and leadership positions, instead of unskilled manual labor, which is needed, but cannot be successful if there are no volunteers to fill the specialized positions. Even a short amount of time with a service organization or a single event can expose a student to a meaningful learning experience, and that one student can impact one disadvantaged person's exist. Community service does not have just one single meaning, however it has many. Community service means something different to every person in the world. To me community service means helping not only your community, but also your school, state, and country. It means to be kind and caring to others, to help out those who are less fortunate then you. Community service is when you take time out of your life to do something that will better other people not only physically, but also mentally, and in addition will improve your surroundings. What I enjoyed most about the Greek Club in Egypt was how the people helped each other and how friendly the people were. All they thought about was how to get through the day as a team. Helping people seemed the most…

Because of the situations that I have encountered through my participation in community services, I can honestly bring myself to the conclusion that I am a better person than when I didn’t perform these activities. Community service is a great way for students to step outside of their comfort zones and reach out to the people that are less fortunate than I am. It has helped to break some of my bad habits, and it has also really helped me out spiritually. I now see that there is a purpose for everything that happens in life, even though this is hard to see sometimes. Everyone in life has a specific purpose as well, because if I hadn’t served those people at the soup kitchen then they might not have eaten that night. For all I know I could have saved a life that night, and I believe that this is the reason why we as a people are put on earth. If schools did not require service time to be done then I think there would be a lot of students that would have never found their true calling/ vocation. I found my vocation through service, working with little children forced me to really see that I love to work with people. You can’t really be fully into a situation, and be happy until you take the chance and throw yourself into an uncomfortable circumstance and see just how you waver in this sort of scenario.…
