Alternate Ending To Build A Fire
Where did she go? Where could she have gone? Oh, no. Oh, no…

Laura fondles about the rugged forest terrain, cautiously edging from root to tree trunk by her mangled knees. Her grasp begged for the small, fluffy coat of her cat, Jupiter, who scampered off into the Douglas fir forest’s abyss a forgotten length of time ago.
There is nothing beyond what she can immediately sense around her. The world returns when her hand meets the surface or she detects a tiny, secluded meow among the trees, and disappears just as swiftly. The strain of combating the ebony shroud engulfing the countryside took hold; pangs of soreness washed over and nestled beneath her eyelids. She was already as good as blind and understood no point in trying anymore.
Jagged

Bright gray fell to dusk, and returned to jet black, pulling the distant figures back into its clutches, and Laura with it. The ground disheveled, and the strange trees slumped beside her and deadened her choked whimpers. Once, then twice, she stutters out Jupiter’s name, and a third time with more conviction. The leaves rustle in response. A haggard sigh slithered up her sweater. Laura felt the dirt sewing her feet down and joining the rolling roots of the Douglas firs, which wriggled up her legs and coiled about her hips. Leaves and soil kissed her bound ankles. A horribly familiar claw rose to meet her neck. She wailed, only to find her mouth clamped shut and something burrowed inside. Writhing, scraping, and raking away at her, smothering every orifice, every sense and limb.

I don’t want to die, I don’t want to die. No one even knows I’m here.

Gathering every hint of valor, Laura brought her teeth together and ground them viciously. The suffocating mass abandoned its procedure and liberated Laura of the foundation they nailed her

WHATEVER I WANT, I GET, LAURA!

Laura’s flight transformed into a brutal tumble. The hill throws her, sent plunging over barbed stones and choppy strips of gravel, root and grass. Snatched up horned bush branches and stray twigs shred clothing and exposed skin, breaking off as they penetrate. Each harsh landing offers a fresh contusion and worsens an old one. She, at last, slows to a halt with the leveling slope, but not before a final swipe at her cheek and a scorching gash to show for it.
Laura lay limp at the foot of a clearing, everything raw and miserably pulsating with any minute action. The remote, feral moaning nor the oscillating atmosphere inpursuit did not register with her. She drifted from stream of thought to the next and faded in between.

Jupiter’s gone, he didn’t want to stay with me. I hope he wasn’t eaten and went home. At least, he’ll be cozy and safe. It’ll eat me, instead. It’s so hungry… It’s so hungry for me.

The forest melted away. The grass, beneath, flattened and the trees swayed like before. The weight of the darkness relieved and dead quiet hung overhead. Stillness dwelled until the rhythmic clicking of polished shoes on a hard floor scared it

Unfortunately, everyone in her company fell prisoner to the gloomy aura she emitted. Two weeks and four days after Sam had left for school, Lelia’s dismal mood continued as she walked through her front door. The sun felt warm on her back and she wanted to leave the front door wide open to let the westerly sunlight flood the entryway hall. She knew better however, her mother would scold her, lecturing on about letting the house flies in this time of year.…

She dreamed that she was running from the river, but the water kept catching up to her and pulling her under. It was so real that she could feel the water burning her nostrils and filling her ears and lungs. As she fought against the rising water, a giant eagle suddenly scooped her up out of the water. In its talons, she hung as limp as a rag doll. The tree tops, brushed against her body, tearing at her flesh and her clothes as he flew- Suddenly, he dove downward and she thought that he might land, but then he flew upward, higher and higher into the sky he went, carrying her along with…

    16. Linda Hogan utilizes a whimsical, yet humble tone when she observes the creature blossoming under the soil. She “wonders how a cut blade of grass knows how to turn sharp again at the end” conveying her curiosity similar to a child’s. To wonder is to observe and and question, just like a child. By confessing that she is “not aware yet of what [she] will become” reveals the uncertainty of the future, and compares herself to the unexposed, “blind” creature in the ground.…

Meanwhile, Mrs. Chipley’s daughter wasn’t faring too well either. Her legs were sore, she was soaking and covered in mud, she had broken an arm due to a confusion with a stray cat and every step resulted in a grunt of pain. She sensed her mother’s discomfort for her and realized something else was also wrong. She was soaking wet from a splash in the lake and, with a shivering, broken and mud covered mouth, cried for help. She heard sirens in the distance, but her legs ached with effort and she eventually fell on the soft vegetation of the undergrowth……

Rubbing her eyes, she leaps out of her blankets and almost hits her head on her mahogany dresser. Damn, she thinks to herself. She pulls her window curtains apart, and casts a furtive glance out the window. It’s a typical day in Harpswell, Maine: the birds are chirping, the water is still, and the ever pungent smell of mud lingers. Eva steps downstairs, pausing to press her finger against a portrait of her deceased grandfather.…

Peter slammed his office door and ruptured another splinter on its face like the thousands that plagued it. His shaky hands fixed three locks across the door that jarred into their familiar cradles. He dragged his chair through the cracked grooves in the floorboards and collapsed into it with a sigh. The paperwork on his desk was minimal. It was the nightmare garden he tended to every night once the children were dreaming, and his wife curled against her own skin, embraced by icy cotton sheets.
