Althea Gibson: Life(Tennis Career)
• Althea Gibson born August 25th, 1927 in Silver, South Carolina grew up in New York City. Her career of playing tennis came from a very young age.
• In 1942 at the age of 15, Althea Gibson won her first tournament under the NYPAL (New York Police Athletic
League) sponsored by the American Tennis League.
• In 1947, she clinches the ATA singles championship and holds on to that title for 10 years straight. During her attendance to
Florida A&M University she became the first African American
Tennis Player that entered the national grass-court championship in Forest Hill, New York.
• In 1972 Althea Gibson partnered along with Pepsi Cola’s tennis project to bring tennis equipment to underprivileged neighbors and she did this for 30 years.
• She became a coach to many competitors of tennis such as
Leslie Allen and Zina Garrison.
• In the early 1970s Althea Gibson became the director of the
Essex County Park Commission in New Jersey. As of 1976 she was elevated to Athletic Commissioner.
• She was the manager of the State Athletic Control Board and later became the supervisor of the Governor's Council on
Physical Fitness and Sports.

Althea Gibson suffered two cerebral hemorrhages in the late 1980s, in
1992 she a stroke, but in early 2003 she survived a heart attack but died
