Working on the Roots Thesis: The necessary work has not been done to get rid of gangs. The elements that create gangs are social, political, psychological, economic, and spiritual and without confronting this issiues cannot be fixed. The governors, school officials, politicians and many others who are in charge of protecting the community and make it a better place are not approaching the problem in the best way. “Thousands are hacking at the branches of the problem; few are working at the roots.”( Thoreau); Many who wish to eliminate gang violence are not willing to do it from the root; they are either too frightened, or find it is easier to blame the gang members than to blame themselves. First Paragraph: The people are forced to live in a society who looks down on them due to their economic stand; many of this people have a hard time finding jobs that would like to hire them. Many of the people in this type of societies have nothing to lose. The officials who try to get rid of gangs do not make a big mistake by threatening them with things they do not even have nor do they cherish. You can’t threaten people when there is nothing to take away from them.
Ex: pg. 157 and invitation to abandon illusions about a situation… They had no voice, were denied certain rights by our government. Pg. 19 “looks spic you can’t sit there! Second Paragraph: Many of this gangs form from men who were once children, who have suffered through much Psychological and physical abuse, not only from their own family as well as from peers and others who seem to think are better than them. They want the power.
Ex: pg. 91 they looked agitated…..

Third paragraph: If society and officials as a whole want to get rid of gangs they should try to work out with the issues that initiate a gang in a young’s person life, try to work with them not push them to the side.
Ex pg. 184 it also time you understood….
Pg. 245 I hold chava as if he were cornmeal…
Pg. 248 some 640 liquor stores.
Conclusion: Much of the gang violence has to do with the incompetence of the officials, and people in power. If all the officials as well as the family members work together gang violence can be diminish if not stopped. They have to work from the root, they have to work with the small children that see this violence all the time. They have to work with the teenagers that feel there is nothing else out there for them and show them different paths to life. They have to work with the parents to support the children and take the necessary measures to help them. Most important they have to work on themselves, they have to learn to understand the reasons why there is gang violence instead of taking the easy approach to reprehend, and imprison them without a chance at life.

Ways in which police departments have help is that they try to familiarize themselves with gang members know them on first name basis, keep an eye on them and the place where they hang out, as well as offering programs for this gang members to get involved in, that wil pursue a carrier on law enforcement.
