There are many techniques used to create meaning in the text ‘Memorial’ written by Shaun Tan and Gray Crew. A detailed examination of any double page from Memorial can show how well the author and illustrator uses these techniques to show meaning.…
The memorial is conceptually convincing but not optically convincing. More specifically, she includes two-point linear perspective where two parallel lines converge into one point. Maya also includes the concept of space in the Peace Chapel, suggesting depth but not implying it unless you view the work from a horizontal view. From a bird’s eye view, the Chapel would just appear a simply a circle of rocks, but from standing view the sculpture appears as much more than that appearing to be an area of meditation or similar to a giant “foot…
One thing I have to say about this particular memorial is that it’s far more emotionally involving. The Freedman’s Memorial is architecturally classic and emotionally wrenching. It does what a true memorial is supposed to do: it makes you feel the pain and sacrifice of the people it memorializes. The Freedman’s Memorial is a mixture of park and sculpture garden. A wrought-iron fence surrounds most of the small park, which is planted in spreading pecan trees.…
Although it does not look like there was not too much thought into the design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, there was actually an extreme amount of thought put into it. One end of the memorial points to Washington Monument that represents the first president of the US. The other end of the Memorial points to the Lincoln Memorial which not only represent another president but where other historical events took place. Its shape can be left up to your interpretation; two long rectangular walls come together to form an angle or maybe half of a diamond. The walls are made of black marble that give off a mirror like reflection. “To find one name, chances are you will see the others close by, and you will see yourself reflected through them.” (Lin, 2000) The momorial was built and created to keep the focus on those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for this nation, not to focus on the war, and that is why only names were put on the wall.…
Michael J. Lewis gave a lecture at Hillsdale college in Michigan in 2012 that was later adapted to the article “The Decline of American Monuments and Memorials.” This article was published by the college. The goal of article is to convince the audience that the recent generations of monuments and memorials are on a decline regarding their design and concept, and to inform readers the reason why the decline has occurred. Lewis has is PHD from the university of Pennsylvania. He is currently a professor at Williams College.…

Poole’s tone through his descriptions of the growth and architectural development of Arlington National Cemetery is astonishment. Poole’s detail included in his writing when talking about the building of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier really illustrated how amazed he was by the time it took to make it to perfection. Poole used this same tone when he was describing the incredible growth and transformation the cemetery went through after the civil war. The cemetery went from a military fort to a giant cemetery in a very short period of time. Poole’s impressed attitude when discussing the growth of the cemetery allowes the reader to share the same impression of the growth.…
The Franklin Del Roosevelt monument is regarded as one of the most engaging sites in Washington DC. The memorial's reputation was obtained through sophisticated design by Lawrence Halprin in which he took into deliberation the symbols, images, words, and shapes that would be utilized to convey Franklin Del Roosevelt's personal conflicts and accomplishments throughout his lifespan.…
However, Arlington has a special meaning the men and women buried here were veterans, soldiers or family of such service men. It serves as a way for the serviceman’s family to honor and remember him as a hero of America; as is every body buried under all of those headstones which stretch for acres across the beautiful scenery. Yet this cemetery isn’t only full of graves, there are many memorials and monuments such as the Civil War Unknowns Monument, Iran Rescue Mission Monument, Infantry Division Monument, and President John F. Kennedy Gravesite just to name a few. This cemetery was built to be the final resting place of honorary American service men which include nurses, astronauts and other groups directly servicing the United States of…

Human life is short in reference to the timeline of mankind and each year, many significant individuals who benefited humanity greatly, pass away. In order to remember these revolutionaries, groups and organizations will engender monuments. When creating these sites of remembrance, factors such as location, size and personalization need to be considered.…
"The use of names was a way to bring back everything someone could remember about a person. " They stated in Source G. But it doesn't always have to be about a certain person. It can be about a matter that happened and impacted the world, the US, or us as a people. For example, World War 2. The whole world knows about it, schools teach it, people talk about it. Many died and they made an exhibit for the ones who died in it. So we can remember what happened. Put it in a peaceful place, so people can go and quietly remember the memorial. Put it in a beautiful place that people will actually want to go too.…
It is most commonly thought that Komunyakaa is the narrator, telling this poem in first person straight from his memories of the Vietnam War. He uses the physical properties of his surroundings and the wall itself to illustrate his recollections. The polished surface of the wall casts a ghostly illusion to those who stare and gives an impression that Yusef Komunyakaa’s views of these ghosts are a representation of the struggle Yusef Komunyakaa suffers in search for his emotional resolve over the Vietnam War. It is easy to agree with Brown’s statement, “Ironically, the memorial is popularly referred to as "the wall" because it is shaped like a wall; however, its "nickname" also signifies the emotional dead end many survivors of the war come up against when visiting the site.” Brown 1. Over the entirety of his work, Komunyakaa plays with perception and illusion, showing that the memories of the war are still haunting him and interrupting his ability to recognize the correct time and space.…
The Vietnam War officially ended in April of 1975 for the United States, but the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was not constructed and dedicated until March of 1982, seven years later. The viewer would notice the memorial is a black granite wall stretching around the Constitutional Gardens in Washington, D.C., which display the names of the service men and women who served in the Vietnam War. On the other hand, the Korean War officially ended in July of 1953, but the Korean War Memorial was not constructed and dedicated until July of 1995, forty-two years later. The viewer would notice the memorial is a combination of a large black granite wall surrounding nineteen stainless…
Young’s analysis in his article “Texture of Memory” brings up the role changing of monuments within the modern and contemporary society. She describes how people have different memories and different places and people may look at places and see them as how they were once looked at and a remembered to be or, have a brand new idea or thought towards the landscape. She says within her paper “ New generations visit memorials under new circumstances and invest them with new meanings.” Throughout the reading she continues to mention that “memorials” recall tragic events and provide places to mourn, while “monuments” are considered as celebratory markers and may be heroic individuals. Certain architecture changes as it becomes involved in modern…
