Today thousands of researches are being done on the attempt to slow down or stop the spread of the disease. One of the most promising results are pointing towards the effect physical exercise has on patients. Researchers believe that there is an important connection between dementia and heart health risk factors like cholesterol and high blood pressure, and it so happens that this health risk factor could be prevented with physical activity. A research from the Danish Dementia Research Center that was led by Steen Hasselbalch is giving promising results. The research consisted of a large experimental group of people with moderated Alzheimer’s disease. The purpose of the research was to study the effect that aerobic exercise has on the way the experimental group is able to perform activities on a daily basis, neuropsychiatric and depression symptoms and their quality of life. Two hundred patients aging from 50 to 90 years old with a median MMSE score of 24.0, where randomly assigned to either a control group or a supervised aerobic program. The control group continued with their regular routine, standard care no extra physical exercise. While the experimental group was assigned to a total of a 180 minutes’, weekly supervised exercise sessions, for a 16week period. Alzheimer’s is known to be a causer of great distress for both people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. so finding a cure is going to be a great help towards society. I personally know a close friends of the family that suffers form Alzheimer’s and I can say is one of the saddest process I seen. She started by forgetting simple stuff like forgetting conversations but on a 4 years course she has forgotten almost every single detail of her life, the only person that she is able to recognize is her husband, she doesn’t even remember she has kids.
