The interview process was the toughest part. Getting my father to sit down, collect his thoughts, and try to remember his upbringing was a challenge. My father suffers from Alzheimer’s. However, he is at the earlier stages. He remembers his past for the most part. The interview process took 2 days to accomplish. My father naps a lot and got sleepy after the first 10 minutes of the first session. When he got sleepy. I encouraged him to take a nap if he needed one, he took a 2 hour nap, in the mean time I watched a movie to pass time. After he woke up from his nap. I made him a cup of tea. Then we resumed the interview.

He worked as a military general. He met my mother in Mogadishu, and married my mother when she was 16 years old. My father is 23 years older than my mother. Since there is a huge age difference, my grandfather did not approve of their marriage. However, my parent’s were in love. My mother had to convince her father, that Abdi (my father) was a suitable partner for her. After my father proved himself to my grandfather, my grandfather gave my parents his blessings. My grandfather raised my mother and her 8 sisters and 2 brothers as a single father. My mother lost her mother when she was 12 years old. My mother is the 2nd oldest of her siblings. She helped my grandfather with raising her siblings. She took on many responsibilities at a young age. Especially with me, my mother understands how sensitive I get when she mentions death in the family. She makes the topic as painless as she can for me. The thought of my mother passing away makes me cry, therefore, she avoids discussing this topic with me. However, when she gets severely sick, she reminds me to look after my father, my younger brother, and younger sister. In case she passes away. She also reminds me to pay off her loans, so she can leave this world with no debt. In Islam, when a person passes away, it’s best for them to leave this world with no loans, however, if they have debt to pay off, then the family must pay off their debt (PowerPoint 11, slide
