Amanda Grumke Obstacles
When a person begins writing they have many obstacles that they must overcome. Some face issues with creating well-written sentences, writing thesis sentences and others face issues with expanding their vocabulary. It can be difficult to do and takes a great deal of practice and patience. A student, Amanda Grumke, faced these same obstacles as she began writing. At the beginning of her English Composition 1 class, her writing landed at a very low level. After a semester of practice, she has made improvements. Amanda has improved her sentence structures, transitional words, and improved points of view. At the beginning of Amanda’s essays, she used very basic sentences. Now she is using a mix of sentence structures. She struggled with the correct usage of commas. In essay 2 page 2, Amanda wrote: “As the silver chain rotates I think of the chrome hubcaps rotating….” In this sentence, she is missing the comma between rotates and I. In her later essays, Amanda has made a great deal of improvement. In essay 3 she wrote, “When it comes time for the mothers to deliver, I will be able to provide medical attention.” This sentence shows a good usage of commas. She remembered to place a comma to connect the two thoughts. Furthermore, in journal 9, Amanda focused on improving her sentences that obtained passive voice. She really struggles with this. Several of the key problems that she faced with writing transitional sentences came back to not having strong transition words. In essay one, the transitional words that were commonly used included first, typically, and now. These words are at a low level of writing. After her first essay, it is easily noticed that she has worked hard at finding better transitional statements. In essay two, she used the words although, furthermore, and in addition to her transitional words. These are more proper to use at the college level

Truss begins answering questions related to the importance of punctuation. Listening to the interview really makes you think about how punctuation helps an author communicate with a reader. As Truss expresses communication should be clear and that requires punctuation. She truly cares about the clarity in writing and feels it is important; which I have to agree. Truss also explains how important punctuation is in books for a…

As a writer, I never doubted my abilities. I know about past flaws and I’m sure I’m still oblivious to the current one’s I’m making. One flaw that it visibly noticeable throughout my work in high school is with the use of transitions and how the work flows together. In ninth, English I and II, the works were choppy and lacked even the smallest transitions, but when looking at works from English IV (AP English) or from this class, they’ve greatly increased in usage and my writings have become increasingly smooth.…

After reading the article “The Composing Processes of Unskilled College Writers” by Sondra Perl I have been forced to understand how writers write. The writing process is a situation that is approached from various angles. In the writing process techniques and sequences from person to person are often diverse, but it is one of the ways one may be expressed. The goal of Perl study was to “see how unskilled writers write, can their writing process be analyzed in a systematic, replicable manner, and what does an increased understanding of their process suggest about nature of composing in general and the manner in which writing is taught in schools.” (191) With Perl performing this observation and collecting several amounts of data I decided to perform an observation on my writing by paying close attention to how I write. With analyzing I realized that my writing process have a very sequential pattern. I also have noticed that many acts of critical planning and editing are carried out through many of my writings and it has had a negative effect on the majority of my writing masterpieces. Subsequent to carefully critiquing my writing I have realized that all individuals have a different way they write.…

The author Jerry Spinelli developed Amanda Beale to be a very understanding person in the book Maniac Magee. Amanda is very understanding throughout the book, In the beginning of the book, Amanda was clearly revealed as understanding because she knew that Maniac wanted to borrow one of her books. Even though they were her only books and she hardly knew him, she knew that he was a person she could trust. Also, the fact that he looked like a hobo may have alarmed her but, she knew that he could be a trustworthy person. Another reason why Amanda would be a great teacher is that she is not only understanding with maniac but with others too. She loved he little brothers very much so that is why she used to take baths with them she does not anymore…

One of my errors in the first essay that I have always had trouble with is run-on sentences. A fused or run-on sentence is when two or more independent clauses are joined together without an appropriate punctuation or conjunction. There are at least four ways to correct a run-on sentence. The first way is to separate them into two different sentences by putting a period at the end of the first subject and the verb group. After which, you capitalize the next letter. For example, instead of writing Nathan is a kind young man, he really loves animals. you would write Nathan is a kind young man. He really loves animals. In a second way sometimes two sentences are very close in meaning, therefore, full end-stop punctuation would not work. Instead, a semicolon can be used to separate the…

The comma splice troubled me so hard. I sometime feel comma splice as an error, a horror, a nightmare, an insult- something so terrible, to be dreaded and denounced. I feel so, may be because of my incomplete knowledge of sentences development. The way of writing essays and writing articles was way different in high school. We were given to write a personal essays. Those personal essay didn’t contain any thesis. We just wrote what we thought about the topic without any research on that topic. We were supposed to use British English. From elementary school to high school we studied only British English, all the textbooks and study materials was based on the rules of British Grammar. Also, the papers we wrote were just graded randomly and roughly. May be because of these sets of practice I may have committed…

The art of writing is a unique skill that requires the writer to have great flexibility and be open to improvement. Some may consider themselves a “perfect writer”, when in reality, no one is, and will ever be. Writing is a process that requires one to continuously build on skills learned in previous situations, applying new techniques and strategies to future writing projects. Different settings require different writing styles, and with that being said, one must be willing to change their writing skills to suit the requirements of their current setting. In the following essay I will reflect on past writing assignments, identifying my best and worst writing courses, strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and my opinion on why writing may or may not be beneficial to me throughout my career.…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

The first writing strategy recommended for Kate is Writer’s Workshop co-developed by Lucy Calkins. Katie’s writing is very repetitive, she includes a lot of simple words, it is lacking details, and it was one long paragraph. Kate’s writing samples are very basic and need further development. Katie needs to learn how to write a strong topic sentence, and include details. As Kate masters when and how to apply what she learns, “the strategies will become second nature (Atwell, 1998, 115).” Writing workshop rules will help Kate develop routines that will support her, and are based on what successful writers do (Atwell, 1998). The teacher can model lessons on how to write a strong topic sentence, and add supporting details. Kate can then reread…
