Originally, California was an idolized state as the agriculture, diversity in regions, and diversity in people made it an attractive and financially beneficial place to be. Now California has one of the highest living costs, poor employment rates, low education scores, and a lack of quality public facilities. One of the causes, according to the article "The Fourth Branch of Government," is Governor Hiram Johnson's implementation of a more direct state democracy with referendum, initiative, and recall. The article explains how initiatives are more powerful and dangerous than referendums, which I partly agree with. Then it discusses how direct and indirect initiative differs as well as their consequences, which are true, and how the problems…
As of now, we only have two different democratic representation models: trustee and delegate. The trustee model says that representatives should be allowed to use their own judgment when deciding upon how they will vote on particular legislation. A trustee tries to lead his/her constituents, rather than follow them. Trustees are willing to run the risk of losing re-election if that means voting for the right thing, and I respect that.…
Beautiful Uncertainty has four chapters: summer, winter, fall, and spring. On chapter one (winter) is about how Jesus never fails to bring ourselves laughter, joy and surprises in life, and with that it tells us that God is not just as a Father and as a savior but also a friend when it times we are broken, scared, confused, lost and many more. The second chapter (spring) is all about if we are willing to hand the pen to Jesus to our lives, he writes a much more beautiful story than we could ever ask for or imagine and how important to embrace ourselves for what we are especially the imperfections and flaws we have always seen because God love us for what we are. The third chapter (summer )is about love, sometimes in life we dedicate entire chapters and books to people who barely give us a footnote in the story of their lives but there are some points in life that will remind us that we are just humans.…
The chaos in this book is when the ghost is haunting Herbie and Diane (81). The order happens after Herbie discovers why he is being haunted and can help the ghost move on with their lives (160). “…, walking slowly at first but unclenching and beginning to run as they get back to the main path” This sentence from the text shows how chaotic it was and how they were in a rush to get out of that situation as soon as possible. Another theme of this text is family. Family plays a strong role in this book as the narrator who is dead is the older brother of Herbie the boy that is being haunted. Also, Eamon Connelly who is haunting Herbie turns out to be his great grandfather that needs help from only a family member. This shows how strong the family bond is no matter if you are in the after life or not. The last theme I noticed at the end of this book is love and sacrifice. Herbie has so much love for a family member he has not even met yet that he sacrifices his own life by following him up a big hill to make sure his great grandfather can move on…

Critically, ambiguity is the purpose of the veil since it causes such a controversy in the town. The contrast between the explicit and the implicit nature of the veil shows with Elizabeth’s comments “there is nothing terrible in this piece of crape” (5) and town reactions. Due to the speculation, Mr. Hooper’s status in the town changed, becoming increasingly separated from the community as the ambiguous nature of the veil gained spread. Then, there is the question of is there any real purpose beyond the effect it had on the village since Mr. Hooper prevented him from ever taking off the…
An unreliable perspective is used through the text, employing a narrative voice which results in ambiguity, leading the reader to think about the reality of the novel.…
The United States’ government has progressively changed since its founding. John Locke’s description of a government is not exactly how it should be as described by James Davison Hunter. Locke wrote “The Second Treatise of Government” which pointed out the role of a government and the liberties of its citizens. On the other hand, Hunter wrote “The Enduring Culture War” that noted the ongoing “war” of large institutions and government that misrepresents its own people.…
Mary, a member of the younger generation and like every other resident of Garden Place, "did not talk to many old people any more" and owned a house that looked like the one beside and across it. Mary, knowing both sides, and has heard both Mrs. Fullerton and her neighbors' stories, is in a dilemma. She sacrifices being the topic of gossip at the next coffee party and asserts her position as one who does not care how things look and stands up for Mrs. Fullerton. Mary differs from every other resident of Garden Place by showing vulnerability while her discrete refusal to conform with the others imperceptibly bridges the division between the two…
In the United States we have three different branches that make up our government. The branches include: the legislative branch, the executive branch, and the judicial branch. Even though they are all part of the U.S. government, they all have separate powers and responsibilities. For example, the legislative branch is able to make a law, while the executive branch enforces that law. All of the branches are made up of many different people with their own rolls in the branch.…
The most used defense in United States history has always been the Constitution. People have justified many deeds and/or criminal actions with this document. Written a little over two hundred years ago, it’s no surprise that the Constitution is highly debated. In fact, the United States has an entire branch of government specifically for interpreting the Constitution: the judicial branch. However, even the judicial branch’s interpretation is debated; the Supreme Court is constantly judged for its decisions. People wonder just what role the Supreme Court must have in interpreting the Constitution; many varying ideas have surfaced about this. Some take on a more literal interpretation of the Constitution when judging the level of constitutionality…

Legislative tasks are not easily formed. Within our government there are three branches. The executive branch is the branch that oversees healthcare matters with the president as the “CEO”. The other two branches, legislative and judicial, serve their own purpose each separate from the other two. Each branch contributes its own unique processes in establishing social policy.…
These laws influence the organization’s decision-making and its day-to-day operations because Congress passes the laws that govern the United States, but Congress has also authorized EPA and other federal agencies to help put those laws into effect by creating and enforcing regulations. (US Environmental Protection Agency, 2010)…
According to Spencer political power is the result of cooperation between individuals in a society. The cooperation between individuals leads to a political structure that organizes the efforts and gives direction to the group as a whole. The political structure derived from this cooperation has to have the power to restrain individual behaviors in order to keep the society together for the same common goals. The political structure gets this power from the idea that everyone in a society wants to feel that they are part of something larger than themselves. In turn this idea of community leads to a moral high ground for social action and identity. Spencer argues that basic political division in society is between strength and age. When people get older they may be wiser but they lose physical strength, people who posses both are considered more renowned. Thus, Spencer states there are three divisions of political structure; the masses of the young and the weak, those who are strong and inexperienced, and those elite few among the strong and experienced. Every political structure is a derivative of this one. Throughout history there have been different forms and distinctions of this structure for example, king, nobles, and people; but in today's modern society we have CEO, elected officials and citizens. Each political structure is different combinations of three areas " despotism, oligarchy, or a democracy". In a democracy the citizens are most important; in an oligarchy the power belongs to small groups of leaders; and in despotism only one person holds all the power.…
