Ambition In the centuries preceding the twenty first, the world underwent a revolution of personal freedoms giving even the most underprivileged dreamers a sensation of desiring to be successful in life achieving great things and the possibility of turning their previously unimaginable dreams into reality. This earnest desire for some type of achievement or distinction can be measured by that person’s willingness to strive for and attain those dreams (Dictionary.com). Ambition is the first building block of success, a life goal developed through life to better one’s position in society, and the dreams of one day changing the known world of the better. Ambition is only the idea of achieving goals and dreams therefore ambition is only a building block toward success and not the source of achievement. Thoughts and dreams are the starting point in any accomplishment by providing the outline of how those ambitions are to be accomplished. By providing a form of self motivation ambition moves the individual along threw their journey toward the intended goal. The source and amount of achievement, however is the combination of several variables and ambition. Ambition can be used to define a person’s character, giving incites as to how far some will go to achieve their dreams. Having no ambition could indicate a person’s self-esteem problems, not that they don’t want to achieve a goal but because they just don’t have the belief in themselves to accomplish anything. A person can even be characterized as lazy for he or she has no desire at all to Pg.2 better them self in society. On the other hand a high level of ambition could define a person as confident or full of life because of their ability to look forward toward their future life. Ambition can not alone be the deciding factor in one’s success for “Intelligence with out ambition is like a bird without wings (Salvador Dali)”. This Suggests that intelligence without the desire to apply that knowledge

    Throughout Winter Dreams, F. Scott Fitzgerald develops the theme of ambition through the main character Dexter Green’s desire to achieve more in life. Dexter is going to college and his father offered to pay his way through a state college. A man named Devlin, from Detroit, came to visit Dexter for business, but they end up talking about how Judy’s life has turned out. She is married and her beauty is starting to fade. “The dream was gone. Something had been taken from him,” (Ch. 6) Dexter’s life was solely driven by his love for the young, beautiful Judy Jones.
