Ambrose Bierce Research Paper
Ambrose Bierce was born on June 24, 1842. He was the tenth child out of thirteen, so his parents were somewhat poor. His father's name was Marcus Aurelius Bierce and his mother's name was Laura Bierce. Laura was a descendant of William Bradford. Many of Ambrose's family have a military background, which later encouraged him to enroll in the Kentucky Military institute. In 1846 when he was 4 years old, his family moved to Indiana. At the age of fifteen, he left home to be a “printer's devil”, which is an assistant for a local newspaper printer. The newspaper was called the “Northern Indianian,” in Warsaw, Indiana. After this first career, he moved to live with his uncle Lucius Verus Bierce who lived in Akron, Ohio. He had been the mayor of Akron …show more content…
When he joined he studied architecture, history, Latin, and political science. 1861 brought the civil war and Ambrose joined to fight. He was in the war for four years and fought many famous battles. During a battle in 1865, he quit the army after taking a bullet to the head. His injuries included blackouts and dizziness. Many war experiences gave him the opportunities to write stories about the war. Some famous stories and short stories include “Parker Adderson, Philosopher and Wit,” “Two Military Executions” and one of his most famous, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” Moving to San Francisco to work at the United States Mint, he continued to write. Now living near bigger cities, he wrote more works of writing including short stories, poems, essays, and reviews. He would then send them to papers like the California Advertiser and San Francisco News Letter. In 1868, Mark Twain helped him become the editor of the News letter paper. Ambrose also wrote in “The Town crier” column. His writing skills quickly made him famous. Christmas day in 1871, Ambrose married a women named Mary Ellen Day. She was the daughter of a very rich
