The setting is a meadow near a high area of rock with a very steep side. It was day time and the sky was fairly clear in the autumn. The setting described in very detailed way indeed. The author describes a wonderful nature around that place. So, we know the exact location of the scene, we may envision the whole picture in the way soldier can see it at that moment. The Sniper’s setting depicts both time and place of a story. It is a series of street fights that occurred in Dublin. These battles marked the beginning of the Irish Civil War. If we narrow our focus to the particular situational setting, we see that it is in central Dublin. Few people walk now and then on the streets, such as the old lady who appears and points the main character who was on the outside surface of the roof of a building in the night. In the street below him, an armoured tank stops and an old woman who has emerged from a side street points to the location of the sniper immediately after which he shoots first the man in the armoured tank and then the fleeing woman who is an informer. For instance, the last line of the story “The Sniper” says, “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face.” This quote shows that war set conflict between two brothers. The author feels that no good thing can come of this situation. Only misfortune will result when families are split apart for senseless reasons. Similarly, the author, Ambrose Bierce, uses the story “A Horseman in the Sky” to mention the craziness of war and to show the effect that the civil wars had on soldiers. At the end of the story, Carter Druse fulfilled his duty and although it negatively impacted his family, it was the right thing to do. Carter's choice will be with him forever, but he can learn to accept that his choice saved the army of his loyalty and
