For one important order it was necessary for a production representative to work in the quality control department with the chief test engineer, Ashok. Charles Able, the manager of production, assigned James, one of his capable assistants, to this job. James had worked with Able for yeas and was well acquainted with this equipment order, since he had coordinated its production for Able.

A week after began working with Ashok he reported to Able that he was having difficulty with Ashok and that Ashok seemed to resent his presence in the test section. Able agreed that a crisis situation might be developing and said that he would visit the test section and attempt to talk with Ashok. When Able visited the test section, Ashok immediately started complaining about James. He said that James undermined Ashok’s authority by giving testers instruction that were at variance with Ashok’s. He claimed that James even contradicted him in front of the testers. After a number of other complaints he asked Able to remove James from the test section and send a substitute. Ashok even threatened that if Able did not remove James, Ashok would “go over his head” to have James removed. Able listened and asked questions, but made no judgments or promises.

James apparently saw Able talking to Ashok, so before Able left the test section James approached him with the comment, “well, I guess Ashok has been telling you a tale of woe about me.” Able acknowledged that Ashok had complained but he omitted mentioning Ashok’s threat to have James transferred. “That’s Ashok, all right,” said James. “He can’t stand to have anyone try to

The Union victory in the Civil War in 1865 may have given some 4 million slaves their freedom, but the process of rebuilding the South during the Reconstruction period (1865-1877) introduced a new set of significant challenges. Under the administration of President Andrew Johnson in 1865 and 1866, new southern state legislatures passed restrictive "black codes" to control the labor and behavior of former slaves and other African Americans. Outrage in the North over these codes eroded support for the approach known as Presidential Reconstruction and led to the triumph of the more radical wing of the Republican Party. During Radical Reconstruction, which began in 1867, newly enfranchised blacks gained a voice in government for the first time in American history, winning election to southern state legislatures and even to the U.S. Congress. In less than a decade, however, reactionary forces–including the Ku Klux Klan–would reverse the changes wrought by Radical Reconstruction in a violent backlash that restored white supremacy in the South.…

Jan Bronowski is a salesperson for Packard Bell (a computer company www.packardbell.com) and works exclusively in PC WORLD (www.pcworld.com) a retail company selling personal computers, printers, software and ancillary computer-related equipment. Working on a one-toone basis, the job involves demonstrating the functions of hardware and software packages, answering any questions the prospect may have and solving problems by matching the appropriate products to the customer’s needs. At the point of purchase, the prospect is ‘handed over’ to someone else who deals with payment, credit arrangements and invoicing. After six months, Jan has been relatively successful. He has worked hard and believes that his confidence, the ability to strike up rapport with prospects and his ability to ‘read a prospect’ have contributed to his success. The company have decided to promote him to their direct business division, selling to local firms. As part of his new job, Jan has contacted by telephone the office manager of a local company which produces chemicals and employs 60 people, 12 of those in office and administrative positions. He is excited at the prospect of making his first sale. The office manager was interested in his products and has asked Jan to call and see him the following week. Prior to his visit, Jan has been asked to post the relevant details of his products to the office manager. He has also been requested to bring some of the equipment to demonstrate to the office staff who would eventually use any such equipment. Thinking about his forthcoming visit, Jan is apprehensive; his background in retail has been with relatively inexperienced customers, and he is unsure of his ability to explain the product in these new surroundings to a more technical audience. He is also worried about demonstrating the product to the office staff since one of the advantages which will become apparent at any such demonstration is the potential staff savings of the…
