I agree that Christians suffer some kind of discrimination in an environment where Christianity is less valued. I think the reason why in America Christians don’t suffer as much because most people have religious tolerance. Other than suffering is worth it. I think that Peter wants us to persevere because Christ has also suffered to save us from our sins. Also, Peter wants us to follow Christ who suffered because of His faith in God. Now, it is our time to sacrifice because we believe in God and Christ.
