“Immigrants who passed the medical exams were now ready to take the final exam.” This quote from ‘Ellis Island: New York Harbor’ gives only two examples of the countless tasks that immigrants had to achieve before getting into America. Some other examples would include things like waiting what seemed to be endless lines having to reside in tenements that are filled with way more than the max capacity of people. “Alone, afraid, and sobbing, Tanya lay on her back in her bunk and placed her cover over her head.” This quote from ‘True Immigrant Stories: Tanya at Ellis Island’ shows an example of how immigrants might have felt when they were forced to stay in the tenements. As we can see, the effects were pretty harsh on the children of these groups.
