In the text the narrator’s style of writing reveals his attitude toward the people he describes. He feels as if the gentlefolks are inconsiderate, unnecessarily curious, people with nothing but idle time on their hands. This attitude is shown in the text by how the narrator first describes how life is with idle time. Then, he later explains some of the behaviors of them. Lastly, he uses pitiful words as he compares life of people with idle time to the ones without idle time. Overall the narrator feels as if gentlefolks have nothing to do so they resort to behaviors in which they harm more than help.…

Between the years 499 C.E. to 1066 C.E., a new era was formed called the Anglo-Saxon Period. Unlike modern day society, it wasn’t the future that the Anglo-Sazons feared, but legacy that they left behind. This fear is portrayed in the poets’ epic poem Beowulf through the epic hero Beowulf. He is a warrior who embodies the Anglo-Saxon culture of masculinity, warfare, transience of life, reverence for the past, loyalty, respect for authority, gift giving, faith in God, belief in fate, and glory. He too fears for his importance in history and strives for the greatest of challenges with the determination of glory, warfare, and reverence for the past. In Beowulf, the poet’s depiction of the importance of Anglo-Saxon culture of glory, warfare, and masculinity is able to reflect the abundance of death and shortness of life.…

Anonymously written some time between the 7th and 8th century, Beowulf captures cultural, historical and literary worth of ancient life expressed through the original author’s viewpoint on what happened around him and his society. Although Beowulf was a highly embellished epic that gave the people of the time period something to clutch onto when “terror was everywhere and myths were few” (A Quick Guide to Beowulf), it has provided society today with rich information pertaining to the early life of the Anglo-Saxon’s.…

Behavior Observed: Upon entering the house Abby politely took my jacket and hung it up on a chair. She then ran up the stairs and asked me to come see her dollhouse. She identified every little thing in her dollhouse as she was showing it to me. She showed me the “windows”, “stove”, “soap”, “mantel”, “rockwing chairs”, and the “shower head, where the water comes out so everyone is clean”. She then began to play with two cats, according to her “the mama and the daddy cats”. She made a deep voice for the “daddy cat” and an extremely high pitched voice for the “mama cat“. She made up an elaborate story about the “mama cat” having to go on an adventure to find the “baby cat”. While telling this tale she used words such as “excited” and “surprised” in the right context.…

“Yet I seek not a fellow feeling in my misery. No sympathy may I ever find. When I first sought it, it was the love of virtue, the feelings of happiness and affection with which my whole being overflowed, that I wished to be participated. But now that virtue has become to me a shadow, and that happiness and affection are turned into bitter and loathing despair, in what should I seek for sympathy? I am content to suffer alone while my sufferings shall endure; when I die, I am well satisfied that abhorrence and opprobrium should load my memory. Once my fancy was soothed with dreams of virtue, of fame, and of enjoyment. Once I falsely hoped to meet with beings who, pardoning my outward form, would love me for the excellent qualities which I was capable of unfolding. I was nourished with high thoughts of honour and devotion. But now crime has degraded me beneath the meanest animal. No guilt, no mischief, no malignity, no misery, can be found comparable to mine. When I run over the frightful catalogue of my sins, I cannot believe that I am the same creature whose thoughts were once filled with sublime and transcendent visions of the beauty and the majesty of goodness. But it is even so; the fallen angel becomes a malignant devil. Yet even that enemy of God and man had friends and associates in his desolation; I am alone.”…

African American literature can be summarized as the writings of authors from African descent. In the United States, African descendents have had very different experiences from each others depending on where they lived. In the southern states of the United States, Blacks have been really oppressed until the Civil War, with the big part being illiterate well into the end of 1800. In the northern states ,Blacks had a considerable greater freedom, and with the end of the Civil War, a new and educated African American social class emerged. African American literature was influenced by these factors, and it varied greatly but it always held undeniable similarities, circling the Black experience in America.…
