This essay was written using characters from the book, “The Ugly American”, as well as the SO imperatives and some of my own personal experiences. For the purposes of this essay I chose three characters to compare and contrast. Ambassador Gilbert Macwhite was my favorite character and hard not to choose with his simple understanding that the American way of life does not fit into every culture. My second choice was Father Finian, a Catholic priest that uses his influential talents to build a relationship with nine local anticommunist men in the fight against communism. Choosing a third character was a bit more difficult choice to make. Joe Bing is an interesting character and a major example of a talent management failure. Bob Maile had a…

When to date the start of the history of the United States is debated among historians. Older textbooks start with thearrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 and emphasize the European background, or they start in 1600 and emphasize the American frontier. In recent decades American schools and universities typically have shifted back in time to include more on the colonial period and much more on the prehistory of the Native peoples.[1][2]…

Enlightenment and Romanticism are both periods of literature that not only are intriquing, but brought forth iconic pieces of work and ideas. I am a huge realist, but I am admittedly more of a Romantcism fan, which rejects reason. Still, I acknowldege the importance of the period and how it has set the foundation of American writing. Before reading work in the Romanticsm movement, I completely dreaded the idea of it. I had a preconcieved notion that it would consist of only love and romance. While there is nothing wrong with that, Romanticism is so much more. For example, I love the story "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving. It consists of key elements of Romanticism including individualism and the supernatural. Irving's story, like most…

In all cases we see emotions and feeling being appealed to over the use of logic and reason. In “The Devil and Tom Walker”, we see the use of greed through emotions to show romanticism. In “Thanatopsis”, we see the use of supernatural evidence and the thoughts of life after death to show romanticism. In “The Pit and the Pendulum”, we see the use of fear through emotions to show romanticism. Growing up as an Asian-American in an area with a large population of whites produced someone who renounces my grandparents and parents traditional ideals and embraces American culture, whether good or bad. As a child, I was embarrassed by my tan, yellow-toned skin, jet black hair, and native tongue. I joined an ESL program, English as a Second Language, despite the fact that I had been born and grown up in Columbus. My English was as good as it gets for an elementary student. I did occasionally spell of “ov.” However, I quickly fixed that mistake after our lesson on phonics. But because my parents spoke Khmer as their first language, I was automatically placed in the class without even been tested on my reading or writing skills. At the time I thought it was fun, easy way to earn candy, play games, and make friends. I was clueless as to why I joined the class. Because of the effects of media, pop culture, and American culture, my experiences living in the United States had not lived up to the exciting tales of the American dream.…

To be an American to me means that we are free and are so fortunate to even have many of things that we actually have. We are fortunate to have a government where they look out for every one of us, and try to do what is in the best interest of our country. Being an American is awesome because we have a society that is willing to help people who are not as fortunate as some of the others. America is willing to help us and let us make our own choices, choose members of our own government that is going to protect us, and coming together with other citizens to help out others and our country. Being an American, means freedom of speech, having a job, donation, too involved in technology and watching football games on Sunday nights…
