Good morning/afternoon Ms Bui and class today I will be speaking to you about the Americanisation of Australia's language and culture through music, film and television.
The national spread of American media including; TV, film and music has been the cornerstone of Americanisation in Australia since 1945, the end of world war two. 'Britain's Farm' and 'America's Junior Partner': that is what Australia was labelled as, around the end World War II. Prior to WWII it is argued Australia was largely an agricultural nation serving the interests of the British Empire, while the threats posed by WWII marked the nation's transformation in becoming industrialised and 'Americanised'.
As I said before we are not AUSMERICA! So why do follow in Americas footsteps? The answer: because we can't help it! It's coming at us from everywhere! From the things we watch, listen to, to the places we buy from and eat in!!
The national spread of American media on TV includes the all time favourites:-House, NCIS, The Simpsons, Desperate Housewife's, Private Practice and more. It even dates back to the 60's with the Mickey Mouse club, which we now called Mickey Mouse club house. These 6 TV shows are in the top 10 most watched programs in their own categories on Australian television whatever happened to good old Bondi Rescue, Home and Away, Neighbours and more?
Many singers listened to today are American for eg; Pink, Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus are getting more popular by the day and sure you may love their songs but Australian singers like Guy Sebastian, Delta Goodrem and Shannon Noll are getting more unpopular by the day!
