The US approached diplomacy through the cultural urban music in the US to the world like Jazz, R&B , to folk and classical music and even rock and roll music. This was considered a pivotal aspect of American cold war diplomacy. The political term for this is the usage of Soft Power. Soft power is defined by getting the outcome that you want using persuasion rather than coercion, in contrast to hard power.
Another aspect of American soft power is not only the use of media, but also via goods and products like coca cola or Denim. For example, during the Vietnam war, as US troops were slowly being pulled out, the United States not only left traces of explosives like undetonated bombs around, but they also made an effort that the domestic market in the region acknowledged the existence of coca cola and tried to make it their best beverage market despite its failure later on.
