American's View Of Original Sin
Sin is humanity’s greatest problem. Because of it, humans are separated from their Creator and cannot enjoy His promised blessings. Therefore, it is pertinent that the church has the proper view of sin. This starts with a proper definition from the apostle John, who states that sin is lawlessness (1 Jn. 3:4). What Lutherans believe regarding sin is different from this. They teach what is commonly known as original sin (Kolb 37-38). First, original sin should be defined. Original sin is the sin all humans inherit from their parents at birth (Jacobs 357). This doctrine arises from the belief that Adam’s sin is transmitted to everyone (Paulson 151). Since Adam’s sin brought physical death to humanity, and all humans, including infants, are subject

The idea of original sin comes from the Book of Genesis, when the first humans, Adam and Eve, ate the fruit of the tree that they were told by God not to eat. Since these first two humans erred in their ways, God then made all humans to be in their image, an image of sin and fallibility. As taken from the Boom of Genesis: "Then the Lord God said, ‘Now these human beings have become like one of us and have knowledge of what is good and what is bad '"(Bible 5). The theme of sin relies on this fact; humans make conscious decisions to do wrong. Other themes of moral nature can follow within the main ideas brought forth in Genesis, such as guilt, sexuality, and tension between the sexes (Rule). In As I Lay Dying, the original sin of Anse and Addie seems to give way to the sin of their children, much like that of Adam 's ancestors. Although according to biblical tradition, each child is born into sin, Jewel Bundren was especially born into a sinful life. He was a product of Addie 's infidelity to Anse, an act that was on Addie 's mind until the…

I have recently read the article Americans Get an ‘F’ in Religion by Cathy Lynn Grossman and the message that it is trying to give out to the reader is quite simple. The article is basically saying that people in America are quite ignorant of world religions. According to the text, not knowing about religions is treacherous. “Americans' deep ignorance of world religions — their own, their neighbors' or the combatants in Iraq, Darfur or Kashmir — is dangerous” said by Stephen Prothero, chairman of the religion department at Boston University. Cathy Lynn Grossman wrote this article in order to get Americans to realize this. The goal is to encourage the people of America to at least learn some basics of religions and what separates each from others. "Religions aren't all saying the same thing. That's presumptuous and wrong. They start with different problems, solve the problems in different ways, and they have different goals." said by Prothero. The article may have been written in the year 2006 or 2007, when President Bush was in office because it reference that activities in Iraq were still happening. This correlates on why…

One of the first major sins depicted in the Old Testament was the first murder in Genesis. In which Cain killed his brother Abel because he was driven mad by jealousy. He was jealous that god favored Abel’s sacrifice of fruit from the ground over his portions of fat. God saw Cain was angry and warned him to do the right thing or sin was ready to consume him. And it did…

The head of the Lutheran Church is someone from the elected councils. It is an important difference from Catholicism because Catholics have the Pope as their head leader meanwhile Lutherans do not think it is necessary to have someone to assist God. An elected council is a group of members that discuss many problems or give suggestions on how to improve in certain areas. The Pope is the bishop of Rome as head of the Roman Catholic Church. Lutherans and Catholics believe salvation is achieved through faith, yet Catholics believe the good works are involved with salvation as well. Catholics accept all the sacraments and priests perform all seven sacraments or rituals. Lutherans accept some of the sacraments but do not perform a few because they believe that rituals do not erase sin, only God is able to do such thing. The Bible is a source of truth for both religions but for Catholics, church tradition is a source that has been practiced for centuries. Catholics have a priest to read and teach the bible for others, meanwhile Lutherans believe that they themselves should read and interpret the…

A sin is defined as any reprehensible or regrettable action, behavior, lapse etc. Sinning plays a huge role in the story of The Scarlet Letter. The most know sin was made by both Hester and Dimmesdale when they committed adultery. Pearl could be considered as a symbol of sins because she never let Hester forget what she did. Rodger Chillingworth was the guiltiest sinner of them all. He never felt remorse…

Despite his rejection of many aspects of medieval Catholicism, Luther accepted any aspects of church practice that did not contradict the Bible’s scriptures. Contrarily, some other Protestant groups rejected any Catholic tradition that wasn’t commanded in the Bible. For this reason, Lutheran churches tend to have more of a Catholic look than their more strict Presbyterian counterparts. Those who followed Martin Luther's teachings were called "Lutherans" by their opponents, and they accepted the name. Lutheranism spread throughout Germany and into Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark). Today, Germany remains predominantly Lutheran, and Lutheranism is the official state church of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland.…

Segismundo, lamenting his tortured and lonely life, declares “Ah, woe is me! Ah, how wretched I am! Heaven, I seek to inquire - since you treat me this way - what crime I committed against you when I was born; though that seeing that I was born, I already realize what crime I committed” (Calderón de la Barca 4). This is a clear reference to the heredity of original sin, and the Catholic audience, who likely would have struggled to justify the hand-me-down nature of original sin, would have been reminded of their stance against the Protestant belief. Calderón continues his reference original sin as Segismundo proceeds to compare his human judgment with that of the animals, stating “the fish is born, an abortion of algae and slime, and no sooner does it find itself on the waves, like a boat of scales, than it turns in every direction, measuring the immensity of all space that it’s cold element gives it.…

Views on the topic will be primarily revealed through St. Augustine’s autobiography Confessions with books one and two as the main points of research. This paper’s parallel of original sin will be divided into two main sections. First, a summary of Augustine’s theology of original sin and second, a summary of the author’s theology and response to Augustine’s argument. Different sources in theology and doctrine have been used in this paper to better understand and contrast the author’s point of view to that of Augustine of Hippo.…
