These diseases targeted those who lived in an unclean, muddy environment. Few were wealthy while a majority lived in poverty. Before the Industrial Revolution, the population birth rate equaled the death rate. So, when there was a birth, there was a death, which was most likely caused by diseases or the lack of food and shelter. This discovery was a period of time known as the Cottage Industry. During the day, farmers did their regular work, but at nightfall, the families worked in their cottages to spin or weave clothes with their spinning wheels. They used raw materials given by merchants, such as cotton or wool, to manufacture clothes. The merchants paid the farmers for their work labor and the finished products. The merchants would pick up the finished products and then ship them to the market to be sold at a higher price in order to make a profit. There was a few advantages of this living style, one being that the economy evolved and changed into a better, more fit community. Another advantage was that the Cottage Industry allowed merchants to find cheaper labor in the countryside than the skilled craft people in town. Skilled craft people asked for more pay for their work load, even though their finished products had the same quality as the products made by agricultural families.
