America's Unhealthy Obsession With Beauty
America has a very unhealthy obsession with beauty. While growing up, the Disney channel had shows where the cast was around late teens and early twenties. Now, the channel seems to be overflowing with twelve year olds who are all dolled up. Beauty these days is all about appearing young. Companies sell anti-aging creams and lotions, plastic surgery such as face lifts are used to counteract aging. There’s a pressure on celebrities to stay skinny and look young even as they inch their way into their fifties. When celebrities start to look old and are no longer considered as desirable from a societal beauty standpoint, they are moved further out of the spotlight and suddenly it becomes much harder to find a way to re-enter the spotlight if only for just a moment. The average American does not look anything like the models you see in commercials or in ads. For some women, it’s practically impossible to have a thigh gap, which is seen as attractive and something to covet. Commercials and ads are constantly photoshopping their products. The impossible model body that most women can never achieve, is made even more impossible thanks to photoshop. Societal beauty standards have now started to affect the younger generation. Suicide. As a teenager going through school, bullying happens and most of it is directed towards someone’s looks. Some are called fat or ugly or whatever other kind of insult that one can possibly come up with. The incessant bullying about looks can cause someone to lose all hope in ever being attractive. They’ve been insulted, told that no one will ever love them because they’re so ugly, and it can lead to self harm because of lack of self esteem or from acquiring depression. If self harm isn’t enough, it can lead to suicide being the last resort to end the torture they are being put through just because of America’s unhealthy obsession with beauty

I understand it might be easier to find adults to play these roles or that there is less legal work to deal with if the actress is older than 18 but, at what cost of the mental health of the viewers? Most teen girls do have a distorted body image and believe that they are not perfect enough. With this misrepresentation, it leads to self-talk that becomes detrimental to a young girls self-esteem. "Why can I never look like her?" "I wish I looked as perfect as this girl." This irritates me because 99% of the time it is impossible to look like them because they are most likely ten years older than the viewer watching! The looks that these stars have are from post puberty effects (ability to produce muscle mass, little to no acne) as well as strict workout and nutrition plans. These unrealistic views are what are contributing to an increase in mental health issues in today's youth including eating disorders, depression, and…

America is a growing and changing nation, but one characteristic has outlasted the years. The obsession for a socially-accepted body, whether it be wearing a corset, being big and voluptuous or, for men, being muscular and lean, has always existed. The culprit, a negative body image, now haunts approximately eight million people across the United States and is beginning to seep into more American minds as the “Perfect” disease spreads (Davis 8). In the past decade, the pressure to have “the perfect body” has dramatically increased in America; every individual in this nation has a different view of what “the perfect body” actually is, and many people who are seeking it are willing to take radical…

Beauty is a misconception. America's standards of beauty are based on physical appearance (hair, shape, complexion, height, and etc). Standards of beauty promoted in the media are deceiving because in magazines, photos are edited to change the physical body structure, complexions, and facial features of models and celebrities. Editors say that photos are edited to inspire people to stay fit, to draw attention to the magazine, and to make the people more appealing to the human eye.…

Two things are for certain: death and taxes. Yet, unlike taxes mortality cannot be paid off. Presently, contemporary culture has begun to shun aging and death altogether. Currently, youthfulness glitters and tastes sweet. Successful working models begin to lose campaign and gigs after reaching the age of twenty-five to younger individuals. Because youth is so easily replaceable, it creates panic the second wrinkles starts to take form. So much so that individuals are beginning to inject Botox before reaching their thirties. This obsession with firm, plump skin is relatively new. Before Hollywood became the host of popular culture, wigs were often powdered white so one could appear older and wiser. However, nowadays wisdom is perceived negatively with lingering connotations of feebleness and antiquation. As a result, the pressure to remain forever young has been combatted with forced ignorance towards the inevitable decay of youth.…
